What do you think of this trade
« on: February 28, 2003, 07:12:27 AM »
I had a blue Ruger Redhawk with a 5.5" barrel and Pachmayer Gripper grip that I just traded, with a guy from work, for a S&W Model 624 with a 6.5" barrel and Pachmayer Presentation grip.

I have a 44 Mag Contender to cover my hunting needs and haven't been shooting the Ruger much.  I've been hankering for another S&W for target and home defense needs.  I wouldn't hesitate to use this 44 Special on deer with appropriate heavy loads either (where legal).

The book said his was worth $30 more than mine so I threw in some brass and bullets and we called it even.

.....Sounds like a good deal for both of you.....the best way for a trade to end.......the 44special is a grand old cartridge and with modern loads.....with respect to the 6 shot smith......will do anything you are likely to need a regular revolver to do.......and with a little TLC the smith action can be sooo smooth......enjoy the new gun and good luck and good shooting!!

I've got some .44 Special loads from Cor-bon and these babys are so hot you'd swear you had mags in it!

The hottest factory loads I've found are at:
http://www.cnccartridge.com/ammunition.htm

You have to make 500 ft-lbs ME to be deer legal in Illinois.  The Cor-Bon ammo only makes 485 ft-lbs.  The CNC makes 623 ft-lbs.    I've loaded 16.0 gr 2400 under a 250 cast Lyman 429421 SWC for 1080 fps.  They should be plenty for what I want this revolver for.

I wouldn't have traded the Redhawk on a Smith

Admitting prejudice here, because I used to work for Ruger, but I wouldn't have traded the Redhawk for the 624 if I planned to shoot it alot.  The Redhawk will out-last a dozen S&Ws.  If you don't shoot very much or aren't inclined to heavy loads, then it doesn't matter.

But if you shoot that .44 alot with full-up loads and the S&W goes out of time and goes back to the factory within a few thousand rounds, consider this the "I told you so" speech.

I had quite a surprise last week testing ammo. I just put a new red dot on a Ruger Bisley .44 and was testing different factory ammo to see what was going to pattern the best. Had some 300-gr. Federal CastCore (which as always patterened great in the past), 270-gr. Gold Dots, 240-gr. Hornedy, 240-gr. MagTech, 185-gr. UMC, and some good old reloads. The reloads were the most accurate, but too mild for hunting. The Hornedys were the best of the factory loads (gonna try them again in the 300-gr.), and this surprised me because in the past the Federals had always been the best. But the BIG surprise were the cheap Remington UMC stuff. It didn't pattern as well, but I have never fired so hot a .44 mag load in all my life. I promise--this stuff kicked harder than a .475! The flame from the cylinder gap was incredible. I couldn't see the muzzle flash because of it, and it was mid-afternoon! I had guys from booths on both sides of me coming over to see what I was shooting. After that, the 300-gr loads were pretty tame. Glad I had on gloves cuz my middle and index fingers still took quite a pounding.

I love a load that'll make your teeth rattle! Has anyone else had this kind of result with UMC ammo?

I think you robbed him. And you're going to have to shoot several tens of thousands of special-level loads to need any maintenance. If you need a hot load for hunting, no prob. The gun is built for magnum pressures. For any kind of frequent shooting there has been no point in hot-loading the special since the 44 mag was invented. I'm not disagreeing with Mr. Harris. Just saying I wouldn't give the "durability" issue another thought. I have a gun just like yours with 14,280 rounds through it. It's tight as a drum. And by the way, if a fine gun eventually needs a little gunsmithing after burning a ton af ammo over a period of several years, so what? Good luck and good shooting.

I bought a S&W 624 at a show a while back that is pretty much identical to the one you describe.  6.5" barrel, Pachmayr Presentation grips.  It's an easy and fun gun to shoot.  I've since put Hogues on mine, just because I like Hogues on S&W N-Frames.  I wouldn't have traded off a gun to get mine, but then, I like to keep all of my guns.  You did get the better end of the deal, though, I think.
