7MM Bullet Selection - Which ones do you prefer?
« on: November 27, 2004, 02:26:02 PM »
O.K., I'm going to expand my original question a bit.  I'm handloading for a 7mm WSM.  I figure that this question though, can cover 7mm Rem. Mag., 7mm-08, 7mm STW, etc.

I am trying to decide where to start with "what" bullet, and I'm considering three brands:  Hornady, Sierra, and Nosler/Combined Technologys.

What have your experiences been with any of these, good or bad, pro or con?  Which would you recommend for Arizona Elk?  Mule Deer?

Any help or insight you might be able to give would be very appreciated.

Matt

I honestly believe it depends on how much you have to pay for your hunting trip,  if your just having to go in your own back yard so-to-speak, I have the utmost faith that Sierra GameKings will do everything you could ask of a bullet 99.99% of the time.  If you are planning a hunting trip for that once in a season or lifetime trip, then Nosler Partitions would be my only choice, they are the Grandfather of super premium hunting bullets, lots of different minor changes or additions have been tried by almost every manufacturer and none in my not-so-humble-opinion have improved on it.

I agree, the Nosler Partitions are well proven game bullets. I prefer them above all others.

That's what I get for not paying attention, I gotta disagree with steve on this one, the 168hpbt is a match/target bullet, and while would probably do everything you'd need it to do, it is not designed to be a hunting bullet, there is a difference in the jacket.  The gameking or Prohunters are designed to perform on tissue and bone within a pretty wide range of velocities.  The 7 mauser, I'd probably stick with 140s and that's based on no sound reason, I'm not famaliar with 7/08 (hope to be soon though) but the 7mm Express and Mags yep, 160/165 are a match made in heaven.

Well for what it's worth my 2 cents that is. In a 708 I use 154 g Hornady interlock  with good results. In my 7 Rem Mag I use 150 Nosler Partitions with good results. Now for the part that the trick in the 708 I used speer 145 and 150 remington with so so groups I think they would preform just as well in the Browning BBR it just liked the 154 better. But in the 7RM I had both the Speer and Remington turn to confetti on more than one deer since they both grouped very well I did work up a load with the Hornady but after the others why take the risk so I feed it the good stuff. Others may work just as well for you but once you have a load worked up it dont cost that much more for the good stuff now I do shoot the less costly bullets at targets and the coyote that just happens to cross the path.

As far as effectiveness on game once the bullet arrives the Nosler 150 PT, 160 PT, 160 AB and the Hornady 154 IB should all be pretty much dead equals. Pick the one that works best in your rifle. The game will never know which hit it.
