« on: August 05, 2004, 09:33:37 AM »
I'm going on a wild bore hunt in a month and I've never hunted them before I don't know if I should use my 270 with 150gr partitions,or my7mm stw with 160gr accubonds. And also what is the best shot placement on a bore.

I would like some help on this

Thanks alot

Either one will work.  I suppose it depends more on the terrain you'll be hunting in.  If loooong shots are possible, take the 7.  If regular ranges (up to 200 yards) are expected, the .270 will do just fine.  If they're close and you can accurately place your shots, hit 'em right behind the ear and they'll drop right there.  Otherwise, right behind the shoulder for the lungs will put them down in short order.  The heart is a bit lower than deer type animals, so I generally just go for the lungs.  I like a bullet to exit on hogs because their fat generally seals up the entrance wound, making tracking a chore. On smaller hogs, when the brush is thick and tracking is hard, I try to break the shoulders to put them down.  Beware larger hogs though, they have a pretty stout gristle "shield" over the shoulders that can limit penetration.  With good bullets like you're shooting, I'd just hold a bit behind the shoulder about a third of the way up from the bottom and let 'er rip!  (exception being the behind-the-ear shot mentioned earlier)

Have a good time.  Pig hunting is a lot of fun.

i agree  either one is  fine  i  shoot  straight  for  the  shoulder   or  neck area  depending  on  if  hunting   during  the  day  or  night.  Desert  ram  is  right  the  heart  is  lower  and  forward   id  stay  away  from  any  shots   behind  the  shoulder

I like the double shoulder shot myself, also the spine runs lower through the shoulders of a hog than other animals and a high shoulder shot will bust the spine. Either rifle will work, would use the 270 at shorter ranges.

I find that the shorter the rifle, the better for getting around in the brush. Getting to and from a blind, as we all know, can be a chore. We also push hogs if we feel they aren't on the move. That too can be a chore.
That said, I have used my 7mm-08 deer rifle and have been satisfied. Recently, I bought a AR-10A4 (.308) w/ a night scope and couldn't be happier. It's short, accurate and has enough power to take down any hog.

Jake,
Either one of the rifles you spoke of will do a fine job for you, If you can poke them right behind the ear you won't mess up any meat and they will drop like a bad habit. good luck on your hunt.

TXBlue,
Welcome to GBO, Looks like you are fixed for hog hunting. Good luck to you too. Send me some pork chops, Stay safe.....Joe.........
