New rugers

I have heard some ruger rifles had problems with their barrels not being accurate.Werent they contracting out the barrels?I want to buy a ruger 77 in 300 win mag, and want to make sure I don't get an old NIB gun.What serial number should I look for?Thanks

Yes Ruger used to outsource thier barrels. All the barrels are now made in-house on new hammer forge machinery and and the quality is greatly improved. They still tend to make the throats very deep but that can be overcome by playing with seating depth. The new machinery was put into use at the time they started making the dark grey SS bbls, say 7-8 years ago.
