Question on In-Line Kits

I am thinking of getting into in-line muzzeloading and would like some input on the kits that seem to be geared to the new or beginning shooter like myself. I like the concept that most of what I need to get started is there at a price that fits my budget but realize that there are some pros and cons of which I would like to learn more about. Also if there are any kits and how-to books that are particularly good or bad, I'd like to hear about those.

The problem I see with those kits is that they skimp on the quality of the accessories.  Sure, it will get you started, but do you really save anything if you need to replace the accessories in the near future because they aren't good quality?
   My suggestion would be to look at a kit and see what is included.  Then look around for better quality stuff, or better yet ask someone knowledgeable for what is good.
   Unless you are REALLY strapped for cash, shooting is one place that pinching pennies will make you unhappy...you tend to get what you pay for.  A cheap gun will USUALLY shoot like a cheap gun (though there are exceptions).  If you want a beginner inline, look at a relatively inexpensive gun from a good company, like the T/C Black Diamond or Knight Wolverine.

Basspro has a real good deal on their special purchase Black Diamond 50.cal XR for $200.00....it's a blue/camo stock version, nice rifle for a great price, comes with all ignitions systems included. I've got one and love it!

You may want to consider going to the gun shop and seeing what they have in the way of used muzzleloaders if you are on a budget. I have see several different inlines already scoped in the $200 to $250 range. Older knight, CVA. Or look into the Huntsman, under $200.00 New, and from what I have seen and shot, they shoot good. Look into the Huntsman forum and you can get an idea of there ability from a lot of shooters. Just click on link below. Hope you find what you are looking for and let us know what you decided. Hope to see you back here posting. :)  If you can find an experienced muzzleloader or person that hunts with a muzzleloader, have him show you the ropes. Also any questions you may have post them here and I am sure you will get plenty of help. :)

Good suggestions Redhawk, let me add a note though.  When looking at used muzzleloaders, NEVER buy one without having a bore light dropped down the barrel to check it out first.  Unlike smokeless guns, we use corrosive propellents and not all owners are as diligent about cleaning their guns as others.  I have seen some TERRIBLE barrel corrosion on used guns.

Very good point AndyHass. I have one of those CVA bore lights, I use to check my own barrels. But if it is a inline, remove the breech plug and inspect also. A good gun shop will let you do that. At least the ones I go to will. :)

Thank you one and all for the advice. While people do shoot in-lines up here, not many of them are in the crowd I frequent so you guys are a real asset.

I think I'll shy away from the used since my luck on used is mixed at best and I use these firearms mainly as a source for DIY so if it don't turn out, not a huge loss and if it does fly then I got the confidence for doing it on bigger and better. Since there is more onus on the user in in-lines I don't want to handicap myself too much right out of the gate by having to compensate for some one else's lack of maintenance/care.

Will look at piecing my own "kit" together as well. I figured the kits are not necessarily top of the line and view them as a baseline for starting out and improving incrementally on the accessories if the shootin iron is good.

If you don't mind I'd like to add one more question. How good are the CVA in-lines. Price seems good for me and dog gone it, I think they look pretty nice though I realize looks don't always equal performance.

I've got a CVA Staghorn Magnum....it's a basic, no frills .45 inline, came with plastic sights, I upgraded to williams firesights, other than the cheap sights, it a good shooter, shoots as good as my TC Black Diamonds with the same loads, even and it only cost $100 plus the cost of the sights. The firing mechanizm, or "bolt" is real simple but effective, no safety, just cocked on uncocked, but I guess you can't expect much for $100. It's my first inline and I just use it as a backup gun in case someone in my hunting group needs a gun.

Are you kidding Jules??????  Just about everyone that makes in-line muzzle loaders, that's who!!  You usually will find at least one blister packed kit in evry store you go into before the season opens.

But I've only seen one you build your self kit.
