Scope recommendation for 10" .44MAG barrel?
« on: July 19, 2004, 05:12:37 AM »
First question is, factoring out shooting ability, what is the capability of the 10" .44MAG barrel with the 'right' load on whitetails?   Is 100yds pushing the envelope IYO?

I have a 1" red dot  on the barrel currently, which I feel would be adequate for killing whitetails within the ranges that I currently feel comfortable with (out to 50yds, maybe 75).

I am not thrilled with the red dot however for several reasons.   For one its electronic and batteries go dead, 'nuf said.   2. it is a 1" tube.  3. the dot is pretty large, have trouble getting a feel for accuracy when developing loads at 50 yds and beyond.  For this reason I am borrowing a leupold 4x from another barrel to perform accuracy testing / load development.

I know this ultimately comes down to personal preference, but IYO, would I be better off just going with a Leupold 2x20 as opposed to putting the red dot back on?

Absolutely go with the Leupold! That's what I use for my 10" 44 and I wouldn't use anything else. It's the perfect scope for that application.

I have an old 1 1/2 x 4 burris and a straight 4x that I use on my 44 mag. On the Contender.44 mag I think 125 yards is easily doable and 2 x seems to make the targets SMALLER ! A revolver seems better suited to 100 yards max( sorry Elmer Keith) at least in MY hands. For field use I'd go with 4x , in the woods I use the revolver and the variable.

i've never had a battery failure, but i do carry a spare with me when i go to the range or woods for hunting. just my opinion...

Do you turn on and leave the dot on the entire time you are hunting?  What diameter dot do you use?

I may just like the 4x on the .44 and have to buy a Burris 2-7x Ballistic-Plex to replace on the barrel I borrowed it from.....

When I hunt with my red dot I turn it on at the shooting hour. I leave it for about an hour and if I do not see any thing I turn it off. If I hear anything I switch it back on and wait. I also carry a spare battery. With a new battery I left my red-dot on just to see how long the battery lasted and it was still working after 2 days. I turn it off and shot several outings at the range with it and the battery is still working. I will put a new battery in when I use it for hunting. :)

Leupold 2X is a fine choice, I prefer the Nikon 2X.  It's a brighter scope with a larger field of view.

Guys, I'm the first to admit I'm just beginning this 44 Mag journey with my 12 inch scoped Encore.

After anguishing over what scope to buy considering light passage, field of view and optics, I finally settled on the Busnell Elite 3200 2-6 X 32.

My gun store guy recommended it and it was hard to tell anything in the store.  It seemed clear enough and maybe a bit brighter (under the flourescents) than the 2 X 20s from Burris and Nikon.

Truth is, it didn't really feel "right" til I mounted it and set it up.  Now my concerns are over and I feel that the larger 32mm diameter was probably worth it.

I have been experimenting with it at 50 yards and I like a setting between 3 and 4 power while shooting at the range.  In the field, I will have to wait and see.

Lastly, I would say that after an hour in the store, it appeared that the 2 X 20s pulled up for a slightly faster target acquisition.  I decided I would try to learn to shoot well enough to hit something with it at 100-125 yards so I wanted the higher magnification.

Don't know that any of this is useful.  I have taken it out at dusk to see how it holds up in low light--seems to be just fine.
