I'm using a 45/70
« on: May 30, 2004, 03:05:54 AM »
:-D  Ok I have decided to use a 45/70 in a Contender pistol for Maine black bear. Now it shoots good with both 300 HP, and 350 RN.  the hunting will be over bait, what bullet would you choose??

Thanks

Pistol may offer 5-6 shots, but I'd rather have my 5 shots come from a rifle...

As for bullet, if you've ever went after deer with a pistol, find a bullet size a little bigger than that.

The Contender is a single shot handgun. 45-70 in it is an excellent choice for Maine bear.Either round is fine. The 300 would probably be my choice.I dont know alot about ballistics.I have guided a lot of guys in the last few years that have used 45-70s to take their bears. It is about my favorite calibre. In a lever action, the 45-70 is tops for hound hunting with me.I sure would like to see someone use a 450 Marlin up here somtime.I have to think that would be a dandy too.

I know somebody who used a 450 Marlin on a treed bear, everybody within 15 feet was covered in blood....

If I ever purchase one and get down to New Hampshire if the Referendum goes through I'll use it...

DLH-

I don't know about Maine black bears but for bears of any type in Alaska the people their stay away from the HP's and they go for very hard bullets. The reasoning is that they want the bullet to pass through the bear so that if it hits bone it will smash through and break the animal down for a better human survival rate. Now I have not hunted bear as of yet but I like their advice. Maybe next year, I’m load testing for a .45 Colt with my own bullets made with a 300-grain FP and a jacket wall thickness of 0.032 inch, which is quite thick.

I used my .450 Marlin on Black Bears and wouldn't think of using any bullet smaller than 400 grains.  Stay away from hollow points.  I use the 400 gr. Barnes X at the moment out of my Win. M70 but I am looking forward to trying the Barnes 450 gr. TSX bullet as soon as it comes out the end of next month.  Just remember that the Black Bear bones are thicker than any deer and they can/have eaten hunters.  Deer don't.  Don't use a deer bullet on bears.  Let us know how that .45-70(wrist breaking :-D ) Contender works for you.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Normally I might agree to avoid the HP's as a hunting round. but here's what I found. Couple years ago I bought a 16" Contender 45/70, I wanted something a little more up to the job than the 30/30 barrel I had been using (which worked very effectively by the way). The first Black Bear I used this on, I missed with my first shot, I can't explain it other than a 16" scoped Contender isnt the easiest thing to hold steady from a tree stand, especially when a bear gets the adrenaline going. So anyway, the bear stood still at the bait, not sure if I was lucky to to a second chance or he was wounded, I better get in a second shot quick if possible. I loaded a second shot as quickly as I could (factory Rem 300grain HP's, 45/70) the bear turned and started walking away. Now, this isnt a shot I would normally ever take, except that maybe he's wounded, maybe not. So, Texas Heart shot it is. This time it went perfectly as aimed, right up the plumbing. The bear fell forward, very dead. I found that Hollow Point bullet, 88% intact (264 grains) and mushroomed about 3/4 of an inch. It taveled through over 44" of Wisc Black Bear and the bullet was recovered under the hide in the throat area (found it while skinning). It's very questionable if I did my job correctly, but I feel very safe in saying the 300 grain HP did it's job VERY WELL. I have no problem or fear using it, this is the ONLY bullet I use anymore on all big game hunting with this round.

Using a Contender the velocity is down enough that the Hollow point isn't going to come apart like it would from a rifle.  The Hollow point is in fact needed to assure expansion at the lower velocity.  I use Hollow Points with all my Contender hunting loads.  30-30, and .35 Rem.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I as well as other hunters I know of have had outstanding results with the 300 grain partitions. This was in Maine over bait so the range was very close. Complete pass thru and total expansion in all cases including some shoulder to shoulder bone hits. The sd on a 300 grain 45-70 bullet is of some concern. But the bear in Maine are not all that big so the low sd did not concern me very much.
