Moose vitals
« on: August 12, 2004, 05:51:19 AM »
I was lucky enough to draw an archery cow moose tag for Fairbanks.  Although I have shot lots of deer and 2 moose with a gun, I have taken one with a bow.

In my never ending quest for one shot kills, I can not find anything on the internet showing moose dimensions and or the anatomy to determine the perfect shot placement.

Does anyone have anything showing the vitals of a moose.  Remember I live in a town with no book stores............and a limited supply of single women.

Thanks for the reply.  It looks like I have a kill zone of over 12" square minimun.  Humm...... I just shot a 40 yard group that measures 2"x4".  This should be like shooting the broad side of a barn.

I even went scouting moose in the past two days to get an estimate of size from distances.

Labor Day weekend!  Open season for moose, yeeha!

Hey Dave ya lucky sucker,

Lemmi know what stuff your usin for bow n such....I havnt taken a moose but I have taken several elk with a bow and They are some tough critters to pass through..MOOSE is bigger...I would recommend at LEAST a 70 pound draw weight and Pretty hefty carbons at least 11 grains per inch...DEFINATLY 125 grain fixed blades..Muzzy would be my choice with a very good bone breaker tip... and I really wouldnt recommend farther than a 30 yard shot with that setup...Good luck you ya...

I am using a BowTech Pro 40 Dually set at about 67 pounds(no way to measure pull over here).  Easton Axis 340's(9.5 gpi) at 28 1/2", 125 Magnus Stinger 2 blade.

My backup heads are 125 Thunderheads. But the Stingers fly better than the field points.

I am going to try to crank her up but I don't know if I can warm up the night before the hunt as I have to drive for 6 hours.  The old arms are getting a little stiff these days.

Actually my limit is going to be 40 yards. But I practice to 60 just to try to keep improving my shooting.

Howdy Dave,

Keep up the practice to 60 as its a FANTASTIC confidence builder and great for form reliance, BUT, Limit your shots to 35 at the most with that setup...You know as well as I do that 2 holes are better than one and from my experiance with Elk you wont want to shoot any farther than that..I do have a few bud's that have bow hunted Moose and they are in TOTAL agreement on the range with your setup as I have called and discussed it with them..They have all hunted and taken Moose and know what they are talkin about..Daren hit one at 42 and was tracking his for 11 hours before he finally caught up to it and had to put another arrow through it to put it down..The first shot just barely popped the lead lung..He was shooting at 72.5 pound draw with 30 inch draw leangth...11.5 grains per inch with 125 grain thunders...Now I know 5 or 10 yards dont seem like much but trust me brother it makes a HUGE difference in penetration..Best of luck too ya
