Which sabot slugs do you use ?
« on: November 16, 2004, 10:30:15 AM »
What sabot slugs are you guys/gals using. I use to use the Lightfield EXP slugs. I changed barrels and am tyring to find a slug my barrel likes. I think I have a scope problem as stated in my other post.

Has anyone tried the new Remington Premier Core-Lokt Ultra slugs. I want to use them or the Winchester partition Gold slugs. Both the Remington Premier Core-Lokt Ultra and Winchester Partition Gold slugs use .50 caliber, 385 gr. expanding bullet and have a muzzle velocity of 1900 FPS. Thats fast. I have the Remington's in front of me right now. Their pretty impressive-
Distance (yds.)    Muz. _  50    _ 100   _ 150   _  200
Trajectory(ins.)   -1.5  _ +1.8  _ +2.4  _ 0.0   _ -6.2
Velocity (FPS)_   1900  _1770  _1648   _1534  _1426
Energy (ft. lbs.)  3086  _2682  _2325   _2013  _1741

I'm interested in what other people are using and what kind of performance their getting.

I'm using the Winchester (BRI) sabots. They are cheap and accurate, although the one ounce .50 cal. bullets (about 440 grains) at 1350 fps are "only" the ballistic equivalent of the old standard 45-70 load.

Same as Ramrod, Wichester BRI sabots.  I had also tinkered with the Federal Hydra shock slugs (basically the same design as the BRI only copper plated/washed.)  I think next year Ill start toying with the pistol bullet style sabots, but when the Winchesters are making one hole groups at 50 yards I cant really say there is a need to switch.

I'm using Winchester Supreme Platinum Tip 12 GA 2-3/4" slugs. 400 Grn hollow point @ 1700 fps. My Marlin 512 puts 3 shots into about 1-1/2" at 50 yds. At 50 yds, I have the center of my groups about 1-1/2" high. At 100 yds, I can keep 3 shots inside a 3" circle and they hit point-of-aim. I have yet to shoot an animal with them. My hunting partner took a buck at 40 yds with one last year. The shot to the lungs knocked the buck against the tree he was standing in front of and left a big hole on the other side. Down on the spot.

My Browning A-Bolt likes the Lightfield Hybred EXP 2 3/4".

My Marlin 512 likes either Remington Copper Solid,Winchester Supreme Partition Gold, or Federal Barnes Expander.

I shoot the Federal BRI copy out of a Hastings barrel with Leupold 1X4 scope on a Remington 1100 frame.  1.5-2" at 50 yards, about 4-4.5" at 100 yards.

I use Remington 1.25 oz 2.75 inch Buckammers. 1 hole groups at fifty yards. I use a Mossberg 500 with a 20 inch hastings cantilever barrel and a bushnell 3-9x40 Shotgun scope with 6 inches eye relief.

Used to use Remington Copper Solids.  Switched to Winchester Platinum Tips and won't be looking for a better slug.  I shot a buck at 40 yards this year.  The slug broke three ribs going in, liquified everything in the chest cavity and broke two ribs on exit.  Dropped that buck right in his tracks.

Which slugs

Hands down, the most accurate slug I have ever shot is the Hammerhead from Rich Knoster at www.shotgunslugs.com. Sabot stays with slug to target and sheds upon impact. I shoot one hole group out of my 870 Hastings heavy barrel at 50 yds. and legitimate 2" groups at 100 yds. Claims are one thing but actual data is another. I reload quite a bit and shoot a lot of rifle off bench and am a stinker for details. These slugs a the real deal. I grew up in upstate NY shooting slugs off bench and have tried them all. The Hammerheads work unbelieveably well and are easy to reload. Plus now Hastings is loading them commercially and they are called Laser sabots. I tried them and they shoot identical to my reloads but little more velocity due to proprietary powders. I killed beautiful 9 pt. this year that was only killed due to the accuracy I knew I had. I shot through a pie size opening at 60 yds in a swamp and did it with full confidence of the shot. If you ever get a chance to try them I think you will also be amazed at the accuracy. Rich Knoster was a wealth of information and helped a great deal on reloading. My 0.02.
