Barrel channel cutter?

How do you guys cut the barrel channel for an octagon barrel? I've tried every way I can think of, on my table saw, without any luck. I know they're tapered, but if I could just get it cut straight, it would be better than nothing. Is there a router bit? What?

maybe if you routed it out round and then used glass bedding to fill it in you'd have something!

An octagon barrel has 60 degree angles and from what I can recall, an End Mill is needed. That is quite a project for the "Do it yourselfer" and a milling machine would be my tool of choice. I would contact a machine shop and let them do it........in a few hours!

Man, you crack me up!  :-D  :-D  :-D I can just see me walking in to one of our redneck, small-town machine shops with a piece of oak burl, or black walnut, and trying to explain what I wanted. If they even listened, much less agreed to do it, I'd be very surprised. One thing though, I'd probably wind up with the most expensive forearm, on a 10" barrel, in Texas :shock: ... Nah, prolly not! :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

I wasn't intending to crack you up but before I made my router jig, I was getting my round barrel channels cut in a machine shop for $30 and then making the Contender forearms from the cut lengths. They sandwiched my wood in oak blocks and used a Bridgeport Horizontal Milling machine. I watched him do a 10 minute set up and another 45 seconds to make the pass. I didn't know you lived in small a red neck town. I can't imagine what that's like.

Easiest way I've found is to get a cove bit, I believe 3/4" and set it in a router table, 7/16" up and the needed distance from the fence and go to it. You can relieve the sides of the channel with a dowel and sandpaper. Its been a little while since I made a forearm, so my measurements may be a little off.  Pat
