Vaquero Strenght for hunting ?
« on: July 29, 2004, 06:13:47 PM »
I figure this would be a good forum to ask about the strenght of the
Bisley Vaquero .45 Colt or .44 Mag. 5.5" barrel.
I like the looks and feel of the Vaquero and I am thinking of purchasing one.
My Question is can it handle hot loads like the SBH. as I would like to use it for hunting as well as plinking.
Also what would be your preferance of caliber be.
Deer, hog and bear hunting.
Failure is not an option

The Vaquero is just as strong as the Black Hawk.  May I suggest if you are going to hunt, go with the Black Hawk as it has adjustable sights.  Point of impact for a plinker load is not usually the same as for a hunting load and the BH will give you the flexibility of adjusting your sights for either load.  Of the two calibers, 44 Mag or 45 Colt, either is fine for hunting.  If you don't reload, I suggest the 44.  Not saying factory 45 Colt loads can't take a close in deer, but with factory loads, you loose about 15,000 PSI of potential pressure compared to judicious handloads

strength of a Ruger is not a problem... The problem is having a freezer big enough to put all the meat in you are going to drag home :)

If you are a reloader pic your preference. If not go with the 44 MAG as stated above. For such a popular caliber as the 45 is you will find very little ammo available over the counter so to speak. The places that do carry it will usually only have cowboy stuff and if they have any hunting ammo it will high dollar to the tune of 26$ or better for 20 rounds.
