I like the idea of a medium bore becuase of the good penetration, big holes and blood trials provided. I would be interested in your opinion of the 9.3x62 mauser, loaded with Nosler partition or Swift Aframes.

I would lean toward the .35 Whelen or the .350 Rem. Mag, but it occurs to me that 9.3x62 ammo might be more readily available in Africa.

Have you any experience with this round?

What is the status of ammo availability in Arrica?

Any other comments you would care to make?

unfortunately I have not seen a lot of guys with that rifle. One of the nearby landowners has one and that is the only person I know with one. If the ballistics equal or exceed the 338, 35 whelen, or are close to the 375HH it will ba an exceptional plains game rifle.

I'm not sure about ammo availability either. One thing is for sure you will not find ammo for any gun near the hunting areas. You will likely have a days drive round trip if you run out. It's not so bad if it does not arrive with you on the flight. You can find almost anything you want in Joburg or Pretoria gun shops. However outside of there you will struggle.

The majority of landowners will have a 30/06, 308, 270, 8mm, 375HH, or one of the various 9mm rifles. You can find ammo like those easily. The new laws in RSA prevent having ammunition in your posetion if you don't have the gun permit to match it to your gun. AS an example if you don't have a .22 rimfire on your license and you have a box of .22 rimfire cartridges you in a violation of the law. Our hunters can no longer leave behind their unused ammo for future hunters unless we have a rifle in the same cartridge on our license.

We used to have a big box of various cartridges which could be used for anyone who ran short or had a problem. Not any more! Bring what you need and pack it in as many seperate suit cases as you can. Split up the ammo in different bags. This way if something is lost you wil still have some ammo in another suitcase.

A plains game hunter really does not need more then 20 rounds for the hunt. Two boxes (40 rounds)are plenty. Split your two boxes between you and the buddy you are flying with so you each have 20 rounds of each others ammo in your suitcase. Odds are both will arrive with no trouble. If one does not at least you each have something to use.

Question on that last suggestion Jim. If you have to have the rifle on a license to be legal to possess the ammo and you and a buddy split it and each have some of the other's ammo won't that be illegal and likely to be caught at time of arrival? OR is that only applicable to residents or something?

When you check in to get your gun permits you will need to show your ammo. At that time you will each get back the ammo that belongs with your rifle.

The law is geared towards residents but your correct that it must match your permit. When travelling with another person the swap is quick and easy at the permit office.

I have not hunted RSA, however, having lived in Europe for 4 years, I knew many Germans, Swiss, Austrians, Swedes and Dutch hunters that took their 9.3X62 to RSA. Rifles and factory loads abound in Europe (Sako, Norma, etc.). I have been told that the round has been around for some 90 yrs.
