scope for muzzleloader
« on: July 20, 2004, 04:33:48 AM »
This is my first post though I have been getting info from this site for some time. There is a lot of good info to be found here.
I am looking for a scope for my Huntsman muzzleloader. I know that you get what you pay for in optics. That is why I own Leupolds, Nikons, and Bushnell Elites. I don't normally look for low end scopes. But, in this case I don't want to spend a lot of money for a scope to put on a gun that after it's sighted in probably won't be shot once or twice a year. So, I have been looking for a reliable scope to put on this gun that won't break the bank or me (I have already bought a new bow and gun this summer).
I have kind of narrowed my search down to a Bushnell Banner blackpowder scope in 3x9x40 with the circle x reticle and a Swift Premier in 2x7x40 with crosshairs. I can get the Banner for around $70.00 and the Swift for $100.00.
In the store the Banners are clearer than almost any scope I have compared it to, but I know you can't based that on in store observations, you need to be in the field at dusk or dawn. I have heard good things about the Swifts, and they have an over-the-counter lifetime warranty.
Which of these would be best for my situation in your opinion? I know I can spend a little more and get a low end Leuplod or Nikon, but I would like to stay under $100.00 if possible.
Thanks in advance for your responses. (sorry so long winded)>

I personally would use iron sights befor I would use a cheap scope. I have a 209-.50 Encore and it wears a 2 1/2 X Leupold. In my openion that`s the best scope and power on the market for a muzzler.

I'd have to recommend the Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 available at http://www.theopticzone.com/ for $99. Although I don't have this scope, I have done some research on it and would have got one if I had not changed my needs to a lower power scope.

Here's my opinion...A Bushnell 1.75-4x32 Trophy scope is all you need for muzzleloader ranges.  You can find this scope for $90.00 or under and they are great.  No need to break the bank by paying $250 for a Leupold.  I have two of the Trophy scopes on my slug guns and they have never given me a problem in the three years of service.  I use Winchester Partition Gold 2 3/4 slugs in one gun and 3" Brenneke KO Sabots in the other...Both of those slugs have substantial kick and neither scope has lost its zero and the reticles stay put...Your choice in the end.  I'd rather have more money to make some smoke than to have a scope that cost two or three times the value of the gun.
