Something weird
« on: July 19, 2004, 05:07:51 AM »
I was shooting my .223 Encore yesterday.
This is set up with a millet base, Burris Sig. Zee rings and a Leupould VX2 6x18. When all of a sudden my group moved 6 inches left and 4 inches low. After checking to make sure my scopemounts were tight (they were) I resighted in and held 3/4 inch groups the rest of the day.
This barrel has had only 100 rounds through it up until now.
What could have caused this?

I was shooting off a bench with an adjustable rest. My friend asked me to shoot 3 rounds of his to see how they grouped. I didn't even hit paper. I then switched back to my loads and they weren't hitting paper either. That's when I had to resight

couple possiblities
burr on the crown of the muzzle, scope/mount/rings 'settled in' and maybe its just that the barrel has worked out any roughness or machining spots. My guess is the latter..............

The only time I ever had that happen was with a Burrius 3 x 9X handgun scope. It was the scope. I zeroed on 9 X and set it to 3X for hunting. After I set it ot 3X I wanted to recheck my zero and it moved over 6in. at 85 yrds. I`ve got 20 some Leupold scopes and have never had that problem with any of them, but I guess it could happen, did you change the power setting on the scope? I`ve been useing Leupolds for over 35 yrs. and have never got a bad one, but you might have drawed the bad one.

I'd say your scope just went away. I've had two Leupolds do that recently and after repairs them seem better than ever. These have been on guns with a lot more recoil than yours though. Exact same behavior, now it'l behave and then one day move again. I'd sent the scope in.

Thanks guys
I think I will try shooting it some more and see if it happens again. If it does I will have to send it back.

I had a very similar experience with a 270 and a Leupold VX III 3.5-10x40 recently.  The gun would be off about 6 inches (to the left or right) right out of the safe.  After making adjustments it would stay on for the rest of the range session.  However, when I took it back out of the safe it would be off about 6 inches again (usually in the opposite direction).  I sent the scope back to leupold, the reticle was bad.  They replaced it under warranty and now its fine.  If the problem occurrs again I would send the scope back.

I guess I`ve just been lucky if there are that many people that have had trouble with Leupolds, and as many as I`ve got. But I love them and I guess they are just taking care of me for that reason.

Well guys I don't think it is the scope. I shot about 50 rounds out of it before running out of light last night and it performed flawlessly. It has actually shot tighter groups since this has happened which kind of leads me to believe it had something to do with the barrel.  I guess I will keep shooting it and see what happens.

Did you make any adjustments to the scope while shooting those 50 rounds?  I would try and test the scope by making adjustments while shooting.  I usually shoot a couple shots, adjust the scope up 8 clicks, shoot 2 shots, adjust to the left 8 clicks shoot 2 shots, adjust down 8 clicks 2 shots, then adjust right 8 clicks and the last shots should be close to your first 2.  This should help determine if all is well with the scope's reticle (it will also help determine if your scope is canted).  Sometimes there is slack in a cross hair due to turning the dial in one direction.  Some longrange shooters (like Darrel Holland) recommend going past your desired setting a few clicks then comming back to it to take the slack out of the wire.  If for some reason you had slack it may have come out, now that its been adjusted its OK.

That is a very good idea.  My Burris was moving around after each session.  I would come back to the range and it would group in a different location.  When it finally went Poof it shot two dead on and then started pitching them 8" low.  The group I shot while trying to move the recticle was the best I ever shot with the pistol.  Proved the ammo was not the problem - just the recticle moving around.

With mine the ring controlling the power setting got REALLY hard to turn -like it froze up.
