.17 HMR Firing Problems
« on: July 09, 2004, 09:18:07 AM »
hi -

i took my handi outside today and tried to shoot up a box of ammo.

it was all scrubbed up good and had a shot of rem oil.

with almost every round i get a mis-fire, the hammer falls, dents the rim but the round does not go off. the dents are kind of wimpy compared to my 20 year old marlin 22 LR tube feeder.

any one else see this ?

Hi Scattergunner,

Is this the first time shooting your rifle? I had the same problem the first time out with my sportster. It turned out that the scope rings I was using was too low and the hammer was hitting the scope. Never noticed it at home but it was hitting just enough to prevent a solid hammer strike. Hope this helps.

whisky -

i shot the gun twice (as in 2 rounds) before and never noticed any problems.

the scope is well above the hammer by at least an inch.

have you had any other problems ?

SG, I've read of this problem somewhere, the cause is not fully pulling the trigger to the rear, the transfer bar prevents full impact of the firing pin to the cartridge. You need to use good follow through and pull the trigger fully, not just until it fires.  hth,   Tim

hi tim -

i just tried that, i went and shoot 10 rounds, 3 mis-fired.

it's gettingbetter but i think it should better than that out of the box.

this happens with CCI and hornady ammo.

Maybe that transfer bar mechanism needs a good cleaning! Maybe a good shot of brake cleaner and then some dry lube would do the trick??? I've read that NEF sends em out pretty gummed up with machine filings and gunk from the factory, sure would hate to have to send it back just for them to clean it, although they should have done that before shipping it, you'd think!

Maybe too much goop in the guts.

Try blowing it out with brake cleaner, let it dry completely, then just a "hint" of dry lube.

If that fails,  its a trip to a gunsmith.

But ask him what the problem was and share it with us all.

Take the stock off before using the brake cleaner or it will take the finish off the wood....<><....

well, i tried everything. CCI and hornady shells, three complete cleanings (stock removed, tnx MSP !) blew everything out with air, dry lube, wet lube, gun scrubber, brake cleaner, 4 hail mary's, you name it and it still misfires at least 2 of every 10 bullets, sometimes every round at worst.

shot a total of 125 rounds through it.

the firing pin still makes a pretty wimply dent in the rim, so monday morning, back it goes, geez, what a let down. i ordered this thing in early june, took almost 4 weeks to get it, got rained on so i couldn't shoot, then a bum gun......

i do know that NEF will fix it up pretty quick and get it back to me fast, they are pretty good in that department

the 17 is back !

it showed while i was on vacation (a shortened vacation) in cape may, new jersey. one of my customers called in dire need of some stuff that needed to get done so i packed up the car thursday and headed home, the 17 was there waiting for me !!!!

so now it fires every round on the first time, i tested it last night up here at camp, but haven't a chance to site it in to see how it really shoots, but at least it fires every time now.
