Winchester 94 for CAS
« on: January 13, 2003, 10:00:23 AM »
Ok I went to my first match this weekend.  I had a blast by the way.  Those guys shooting black powder are ta hoot to watch.  I love the sound of a bp 12 gauge double going off.
I have a question though I have a 94 Winchester in 45 colt. I was planing on using it.  I didnt see a singe one all weekend. I saw alot of Rossi and Marlin but not a single Winchester.  The group I was shooting with said that they werent as fast as a Marlin or that they would jam up.  I dont really care about speed at the first , I just want to hit what I aim at you know.  So does anyone here shoot the Winchester and if you do any problems I could look out for.
Thanks

Howdy Pard,

Don't have a 94 and have heard varying things concerning them in pistol calibers. Have watched a couple of shooters use them though. I'd be inclined to say that a 94 will serve you well enuff. It may not be the fastest gun on the line, but much depends on the shooter and how well he knows his gun!

The 94s have a rep for not feeding well under the high speeds of CAS. I didn't notice this to be the case with the ones I watched being used. I'm sure the pards using them might/could have been faster with a different gun but they did fine with those 94s. Go on! Give it a try, Pard! 8)

The Win 94 has a longer "stroke" and is, therefore, slower but it seems only the top guns worry about this.  We have several Win 94's  in .45LC in the club.  Must say their owners are much faster with them than I am with my Marlin (and in .38 Sp no less!)

I'm with you fellers. I say shoot until you want something different......you will but that's true with any gun. Don't do what I did though. KEEP 'EM ALL! Just add more.

I've been using a 94 for about a year now using black powder and it is a great rifle. The average shooter won't see a differance in speed between a 94 and the others. As for jamming, clean it regularly and you won't have a problem. I hear the Marlin folks always sounding off loud about the problems of a 94, but they are real quiet when they are asking how to fix their Marlin. When shooting compitition, any gun is eventually going to have a problem. We use our 100 year old designs harder than the origional Cowboys did. And what I said about cleaning is real important. It amazes me the number of folks that only clean their firearms once or twice a year. All of the jamming problems I have seen in a 94 resulted from severely fowled actions. Shoot your 94 and have fun! And welcome to the fire! :D

Howdy,
Did you get my e-mail?  I didn't see this post before I responded to yours.  Since you already have one, use it. If down the line you decide to change ( most of us will  ) Then you can decide what you want to upgrade to.
Time to fold,

I have 2 94's A Legacy and a Trapper in 45 Colt. I really like them and use them often. I use the both for BP without a problem.
Also got a son in law that shoots BP in CAS and he will only shoot the 94. Some say one cannot even win a local event with a 94,well I beg to differ as I have done it and seen it done.
I aint saying they is the fastes but they will surely work for this game.

I can believe I asked about this after looking down the line someone else already asked it.  Silly me, oh well.  I think I will go ahead and use the Winchester heck it has beautiful wood and I  can always sell it or save it for a backup.
Thanks to everyone for the assistance
