The Champ - What Does He Use?
« on: July 23, 2004, 11:59:53 AM »
G'day All,
I now know the name of the Champ, Agustin, and I have seen his picture. Can anyone tell me what rifles, scopes, loads & anything else he uses to help produce this outstanding shooting performance. Congratulations Agustin from Down Under.

kind regards

In small bore heavy gun he uses a borrowed 54 repeater.  In small bore hunter he uses a borrowed 1712 with a 20" barrel.  I don't know what he uses for highpower.

Try to keep them all on the paint.

Hello Leadlauncher, for smallbore standard rifle Agustin uses an Anschutz 1808 repeater with factory barrel and stock with the bloop tub and weights, for smallbore hunting he uses a 1712 that Mark Pharr from Texas put together on a Nesika Bay stock and a LilJa barrel.  For ammunition Agustin used Eley 10X on both guns.
For HP Standard he uses a Rem 700 with a McMillan stock that resembles the Anschutz Thumbhole stocks, a Shilen barrel in 260 Rem. and a Canjar LP trigger, the rifle was put together by our dear friend Ralph Corral who could not make it this years to the Nationals because he was recovering from an operation, itÂ’s the same rifle he used last year to set National record of 39X40 at Ridgway.  For HP Hunting he used a new rifle that was built by Marvin Pearson from Washington.  The rifle has a Rem 700 Titanium action, a Nesika Bay stock and a Jewell trigger, I am not sure whose barrel he was using but it 26" long and was chambered in 260 Rem.  He used mostly 107-142 Sierra bullets, Rem cases and Hodgon Varget rifle powder.  For scopes he uses Leupold/Premier 18x40 on all his rifles.

Thanks for the info Tirador, it's good to see that at least he's using that good old Aussie powder, namely AR2208, sold in the USA as Varget.

Are you going to the Brisbane Nationals? I know that 6 from TAS will be there.

I'll brag for Augustine

Those who know him know Augustine is not one to brag.  So I'll do it for him.

At the end of the week I picked up his NRA match book for him.  He had 17 10 in-a-row pins.

So for the six days, 12 matches (48 banks)  he shot 10 in-a-row 17 times.

I'm impressed.

I think the thing that helped Augustine the most is all the practice he has put in over the years.

The Other Champ - Tubb

G'day again,

I have now got a pretty good idea about who Agustin is & his equipment, what can you tell me about David Tubb. Is he not the previous Champ. I believe he no longer shoots Silhouette, but what did he use?
Hey Ramslammer, I'll see you at the Brisbane nationals.

Daid Tubb participated in the game at a time when there was more experimentation with equipment, etc. This, along with better resources allowed his creative mind to experiment and develop innovative approaches to shooting.

David first developed what came to be know as "chin guns" by developing offset, ultra-high scome mounting systems designe to keep the shooter's head as straight as posibble and to utilize as much of the shooter's skeletal structureas possible to hold the rifle. Using such a system, a shooter would place his or her elbow on the hip bone and rest the chin on the comb of the rifle (thus the name "chin gun). This produced a very stable stance. Eventually, the "chin gun" set-up was disallowed. This still required immense talent for anyone to accomplish what David did.

I met David Tubb in New Braunfels, Texas, many years ago when the "chin gun" was still legal and he actually let me shoot his. If I remember correctly, the rifle, other than the scope-mounting system, was a Remington 700 action in 7mm-08 equipped with a light-pull Canjar trigger (It may have been a Kenyon), a reverse taper barrel and an extra strong firing pin spring. For hunter rifle, David shot Reminton M-700 rifles with no more than a good glass bedding and a trigger job.

Every generation brings an outstanding silhouette shooter. In the 80's it was David Tubb. Agustin is this generation's star shooter.

Arizona Jake,
David has not shot silhouette in some time, but his shooting skills continue to be shown each year at Camp Perry.....Here is the latest Tubb rifle http://www.zediker.com/tubb/tubbgun.html
The year David won all three highpower national championships (hunter, standard and open) he shot the same hunter rifle in all 3 classifications.  This masterful demonstration of shooting should explain the best competitor will win (most of the time).  You must use good equipment, but the equipment will not win the match for anyone.
Watching David or Augustine, is to watch dedicated, highly skilled shooters able to accomplish shot after shot, match after match what we only wish to do.  Each one of us have had individual shots, practice sessions and matches that were great, but the true competitor will be the one that is able to accomplish this over and over.
I have been lucky to watch both David and Augustine shoot, and each one has a very different approach to shooting along with very different personalitys.  I congratulate the winners along with each competitor on the line that is able to shoot to his or her abilities.
C-Ya,
Charlie
