Painting a Synthetic Stock
« on: July 25, 2004, 05:11:17 PM »
All,

I have an HS Precision stock that I would like to paint Fire Engine Red for my wife's B-day. My wife would like it textured, but not a shiny red. I am not a painter, nor have I ever painted a stock before. What is the best way to paint a synthetic stock? What is the best paint  (one that will stand up to cleaning solvents)? What type of texturing do you recommend (she likes the Mcmillian textured stocks on my Anschutz 1712fwt).

Thanks

Having first hand experience with painting synthetic stocks, I would strongly recommend the following:

Take your stock to an automobile repair shop and have them do the job.
They are the experts, since they paint for a living....

chunter,  Polane T is what I use on most hunting stocks I refinish for customers/smiths.  I am not sure if it is available in red and it is only available in gallon quantities so to do one you'd come out way cheaper to pay someone to do it for you.  One suggestion I would give is... if you go with a matte red texture it will look pretty dirty after a bit of use and getting grime on it.  I use automotive urethanes in such cases when I do not use Polane or when refinishing BR stocks.  If you do not want a gloss finish you can have them do it in a matte clear coat.  As for texture..on a lot of silhouette stocks I add a textured pad in the grip area.  Also, be careful with auto shops for I usually reinlet and bed ~3 stocks /year for these shops do not understand bedding is critical and they do not understand weight issues. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at paintfumes@hotmail.com.  Have a good one,  Kavanaugh
