One reason a firearm won't go BANG!
« on: July 22, 2004, 10:27:44 AM »
My brother walked into a super deal for a pair of Ruger Vaqueros.  Once we got them we did the usual maintance.  I think they were worked on by who knows and had some problems.  Both grips had been overtightened and broke one side of each.  Had to replace a gate spring.  After that we took them out to fire and one wouldn't fire consistently.  Turns out someone had done some "shade tree" gunsmithing on the cylinder latch--made it too short.  The cylinder won't always lock-up.  After several tries we noticed this.

If you look closely you'll see 4 firing pin strikes around the top edge of this cartridge--it took us a few cylinder revolutions to figure it out.

I've been told that rounded cylinder notches can cause this too. Check to make sure that the notches are not peened or rounded by excessive polishing.
