What Release??
« on: May 23, 2004, 04:52:35 PM »
I was wondering what kind of release everyone here might be using? My release is an older one and designed to attach to the string serving.
I'm now using a sting loop and would like something a little easier to insert on the loop during the moment of truth.
I was looking at several kinds, the Tru-fire with the rotating head looked appealing but they claim you don't need it if your using a string loop.
The Copper John design looks good as well but is this the way to go?
So many choices,
Stan

I use a trufire caliper release. The jaws open up and stay open when you pull and hold the trigger. I is the realtree model. I love that release. I had used a winnflight but got sick of the thing (glove) on my hand all the time. The trufire is great for string loop. easy to put on during the action. Good luck, Half

I have been using a Free flight releases for ten years, Im hooked, a great release for a compound bow, you are hands free using this release, your fingers are free to do what you need to do without taking of your release off. Its like shooting a gun, has a nice trigger with adjustment on the drop of the baring swivel. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Well I still haven't decided. I do like the Freeflight in the fact that it is made of stainless, but I'm not quite sure about using the glove. Maybe I can get by a shop and try on some different releases. I'm getting by fine with what I have for now, but I do not like the fact I have to snap it closed. I will decide though before hunting season gets here.
Thanks for the replies,
Stan

T.R.U. Ball Stinger Release. It works great. My son and I both use them.  I am very happy with it and don't see myself changing.

Tru-Fire

I use a Tru-Fire wrist strap release.  The caliper is riveted to the wrist strap and can be rotated out of the way.  Several good companies make this type.  Cabelas carries a good selection, although you can find better prices elsewhere.

I don't know why they say a rotating head is not necessary when using a string loop.  It certainly won't hurt!

I own nine releases, so you can see it takes a lot of experimentation to find one you like.

Whitfang,
At Tru-fires' website under F.A.Q. the question is asked, "Do I need a tru-rotating release if I shoot off of a string loop?"
Their answer is, "No you do not. While at full draw, if you torque your wrist either left or right slightly, your string loop will take up the torque, transmitting only a small amount of torque to your bowstring."
Though it may not be necessary, I agree that if the release rotates it would make it virtually torque free when used with a string loop, thus making it a better choice.
Thanks for the reply,
Stan

I like my cobra caliper release. I do not like the Tru Ball "string loop" style release, as it is harder to attach to the string loop than a basic caliper design. The caliper is just simpler to operate when you are cold and nervous and wearing gloves. I do prefer the rotating head design, as well as one that pivots out of the way when not in use allowing use of your hand for other tasks.

I've had the same Free Flight since '96.
I love the glove. It doesn't move all around and is right there when you need it. I have the Loop model. They're advertising these as "New" models but, like I said, I bought mine 8yrs ago.

Well the only major problem I have with ANY glove style release is...What ya do when its cold and you need GLOVES ON????? I myself have been hunting archery for decades and have went through just about every kind of changes and releases you can think of....If your shooting with a string loop and HUNTING not on a 3d course then the best way to go is the simple way...A dual caliper release style...You dont need fancy Just reliable...Scott, Bracklin, even Cobra (cheap aint always bad) has a couple of great reliable choices...Now as far as to your rotateing head question...YES you want one even with a string loop...Look at it this way..I dont know what kind of Bow you have nor how forgiving it is But I know I use a speed burner and its about as forgiving as a woman that caught ya in bed with her sister...ANY angle on the string will transfer into the shot...The dual caliper design is simple and easy and when that big ole bruiser decides to pop up on you you dont want complicated...Thats my advise to ya bud....Good luck on your adventures and may the biggun be within 20 for ya :D
You want a divorce if I go hunting today??? Well sorry ta see ya go...Was nice knowin ya..Dont let tha door hit ya where tha good lord split ya :D

I have worn a cloth camo glove under the release with my trigger finger cut out;) on cold days in the field, no problem, make sure you bye the right size glove,so you have a little room for a glove, I have used a freeflight release since they hit the market, they work real well, like shooting a gun;) the neck swivels so if your not square to your string, not to put any strain on the string as well. Good setup. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

A lot of good opinions here and ideas. Still a hard decision to make. Thanks for the replies. With the wrist style release that I have now I simply rotate it out of my way when I pull the arrows from my target. Could you do this with a glove type release?
Thanks again,
Stan

I shoot year round with a glove on under my release. It's never been a problem. That's how I hunt so that's how I practice.

My hunting release is a trufire extreme rope. My tourney release is a trufire 3-finger magnum. love them both. I do want to get a trufire magnum wriststrap model if I can find one. I probably will have to order that tru my proshop.                                                    Tommy
