What primers?
« on: July 27, 2004, 08:55:24 AM »
I know that every rifle has its own favorite load (brass, powder, bullet, lube, etc.), but do most shooters use standard large rifle, large magnum or match grade primers?

Primers are just another shooting component that is unique to your load, esp. w/ BP.

Some Shooters have or claim success w/ large pistol primers & BP....

Federal 215 primers are considered the standard by many.  They are all I use for BP cartridges.

I have to second that. That is what was recommended to me when I first started reloading black powder cartridges for my Shiloh Sharps and Rollingblock in 45-70.  :D

I have used just about all primers from the hot fed. 215 to the pistol primers.
I get my most consistent variance with the standard winchester and cci br'2 primers.
I found with the 215 primer especially with a heavy powder compression I get a lower velocity at times with a greater variance in fps. I think that hot primer gets the bullet moving before the powder is fully ignited

In the winter when I shoot over a new blanket of snow I find more unburned powder  on top of the snow, I even found big chunks of unburned powder.

Pb Pot: " when you mentioned "the standard Winchester " primers, are you refering to Win. Large Rifle primers?

I've had very good results w/ these LR (non magnum) primers also.

Playing with these guns is half the fun, try this

buy 100 CCIBR2's, Federal 210, Federal 215, WLR etc.

This is going to cost you under $20.00, peanuts when you weigh it against what you learn (isn't learning fun)

Load up 20 rounds of each primer under your best load to date.

Find a good bench rest and go to work

The gun will show you what it likes and you will have the all important trigger time

My 2 cents

Ray.

Yes the standard non mag primer large rifle, blue box. I like them. When my primer pockets get a little loos I change to the CCI BR2's, both primers  hold my ES in the low signal digits.

PF2.
Yes that has a lot of merit, but you can just about make any primer funtion,by changing your load, bullet seating depth, compression and down the line. But the Remington primers really give me fits.

Well that explains why I like the primers I use.
