simmons .44 mag

is the simmons 44 mag 3-10x44 a good scope for serious deer hunting???
its the ver most i can afford (99.99 :oops: ) it will go hunting about 20 times a year and take about 200 rds a year. will it last :?  thanks y'all

My opinion of Simmons is not too high. Their quality is kinda hit and miss. I guess a lot depends on the recoil of the gun you are mounting it on and the intended range. The optics are decent for the price, it's mostly the mechanical parts that  come up short.  In scopes, you get what you pay for.

I bought a pair of Simmons 22 Mag scopes for our 22s and I wish I had spent more and gotten something better. On the other hand, they do work and they have been good for a few years. They hold their zero. Considering the cost, I probably should have gotten Tascos instead.  I think the optics are generally better on Tasco scopes. I don't like the optics of the 22 mag scopes. Generally, I get glass in the $250 to $300 range because at that price there are a lot of options for high quality, durability, and performance without spending the really big bucks.  Ever since I got those Simmons scopes I have regretted it and wished I had gotten better ones.  Can you scrape up another $100 to get a low-end Leupold? I think you'll be happier.  And there's no question that it will be a good scope.  I have a low-end Leupold on my .270 and I really like it and recommend it to anyone.  Mine is the VX not the Rifleman.

I have had good luck with Simmons scopes. I put a 2.8x-10x 44mm Aetec on my Weatherby Vanguard 300 Win Mag and it has stood up well with nary a problem. For the money, I don't think you can beat them. I intend to upgrade someday, but family commitments make that impractical at this time. I also have a Simmons Pro Hunter 2x-6x 32mm handgun scope on my T/C Encore 308 barrel and a Pro Hunter 4x 32mm handgun scope on my 243 barrel. Same luck with them....no problems.

I currently have three Simmons scopes and would not hesitate to get another.

The first is a 22 MAg on my Browning .22.  Have had it for a few years and use it to plink clay pigeons at 200 yards and prairie dogs at whatever range I find them.

The second is a Whitetail Expedition on my .22-250.  HAve also had it for a number of years with no problems.  It was actually a replacement scope sent by Simmons to replace a 44 Mag.  The problem turned out to be the barrel on my old Savage, not the 44 Mag.  In truth, I liked the 44 Mag better as the objective lense was 44mm vs 40mm for the Whitetail Expedition.

The third is an Aetec on my 7mm Mag.  This is a great scope.  I've had it maybe 3 or 4 years.  My buddy has one on his 7mm Mag also.  No problems with either.

I suspect all three of these scopes will outlast me.

I got a 44Mag scope in a trade last summer on a 300WM. My opine of Simmons was so low that I didn't allow anything for the scope. I took it and shot it and found the rifle to be well zeroed. As I didn't have anything else to put on the rifle at the time I started developing loads with it thinking I'd see how long it last. The Simmons did crater after about 70 rounds. (How many it saw before I got it? I have no idea.) Something got loose inside and it would get blurry. Turn the power all the way down and back up and I could see the X. The thing was still hitting where it was pointed! I was Mean mouthing Simmons on some foram when somebody informed me that Simmons has a lifetime guarantee on 44Mag scopes. I didn't have anything to loose except shipping, so I sent it off. Simmons sent me a new scope! I put it on a rifle that does not kick so hard but haven't shot it a lot yet.  I would not take a Simmons on a hunt of a lifetime but I do think that the scope is a good value. I will say that mine is clearer than some other scopes I've saw costing a lot more. But it ain't a Leopold.

20 times a year: maybe
200 rds a year: more than likely,but I would not trust it myself. On a 223 or 243 I would say so but an '06 or 7mag??

I do like the "European Style Focus" but personally I would try to save a little more money on a lot better scope, but If its all you can afford its all you can afford...

You can get either a Nikon Prostaff 3x-9x 40mm or a Bushnell Legend 3x-9x 40mm from www.theopticzone.com for $135.00. Its just my opinion but both the Nikon and Bushnell have better edge to edge viewing and an even more important is the Nikon comes with a LIFETIME WARRANTY...hard to beat for 135

I hate to admit it, but the biggest buck I have ever killed fell to a 270 Win. Model 70 with a Simmons Aetec 2.8 - 10 X 44.
I paid around $200 for the scope at Walmart.
The Aetec can be had for around $135 on some sites.
Check the Optics Zone, John is great to work with.
I bought that model 70 and needed optics quik to get to shoot it.
I didn't have enough money to purchase another Leupold at the time and I was dead set on hunting with my new 270, over my Remington Model 700 in 30 - 06 with a Pentax Light Seeker 3 -9 X 40.
I went to wallyworld and bought the Simmons Aetec. It has been a good scope and never had a problem with it.
I hunted hard all season and took a great 10 point ( 146 Boone and Crockett points with a 19, 1/2 " inside spread ) at 35 yards with my new 270 I purchased just before Christmas.
That was 7 years ago and I still own that rig today.
My friend purcased an Aetec a month before and shot a monster of a 7 point ( 135 Class ) with his 30 - 06 model 700 a week before I killed that 10 point.
My friend broke his scope the next year. He dropped his rifle off the tailgate and bent the Bell of the Aetec. I told him to by Leupold on his next purchase.
I think Simmons make an o.k. scope and for the money it is hard to beat.
