17 HMR ammo price check 6/07/04
« on: June 07, 2004, 10:04:35 AM »
I am curious as to the price and availability of .17 rimfire ammo in different parts of the US.

In my neck of the woods, the price for a box of fifty at brick and mortar stores is between $9.70 and $12.00 + tax.

CCI - easiest to find, cheapest

Hornady - easy to find, most expensive

Federal ballistic - hard to find

Remington - very  hard to find

Federal hollow point - cannot find

20 gr. XTP - cannot find

What is the situation in your area?.

Bought a couple of bricks for $80 each at the local gun show a couple of months ago. Seems to have stabilized there. This is around the KC MO area.  KN

The price for all 5 loads here runs from 7.99 to 9.99 with 8.99 being a pretty common price. CCI and Hornady are on sale sometimes for 6.99. You won't find the 20gr Hornadys or CCIs anywhere yet, they haven't been released, expected availablility is summer/fall.

I just bought 2 boxes of CCI .17 HMR yesterday from a Wisconsin/Minnesota chain called Gander Mountain.  I paid $8.99 for each.  Did not check the price for the other brands as I mostly shoot CCI in this caliber.  However, I did see that they are well stocked on the Hornady, Remington, and the local favorite, Federal.

The Minnesotians are really loyal to the Anoka, MN Federal cartridge products as they are locally made.  I found their .22 rimfire to be decent, the pistol cartridges are poor, and my local shotgun club, as well as myself, tends to avoid their shotgun loads when trap shooting too, we use Winchester XX mostly.  I was snubbed by Federal Co. years ago when I applied for a job, and then did not think much of their ammo, so I am not a customer.

I see .17 HMR is widely available at the gun shows, which is another option and their prices seem competitive.

I saw a couple of days ago that Natchez Shooters Supply has CCI 17 HMR TNTs on sale for 6.95/box. I am kinda partial to the Hornadys, but may have to get some at that price.

What is the performance on the .17 HMR 20gr loads?
« Reply #7 on: June 12, 2004, 09:02:02 AM »
Quickdtoo...what are the performance differences between the 17 gainers and the 20 grainers?  Is there more of a trajectory drop at 200 yards +, does it hit harder?  I may try a box myself when they become available.

Thanks. :-)

They aren't available yet so I haven't shot them, but the 17gr vmax bullet hits 8.5" low with a 100yd zero, compared to 10.4" low for the 20gr XTP. 2550fps MV for the vmax vs 2375fps XTP. They are supposed to hit dealers on or soon after the 15th.   Tim

UpDate 7/30/04: I finally found some reasonably priced .17 rimfire ammo at a local sporting goods store.
Remington, CCI, Hornady, and the new 20 gr. XTP, $8.+tax.
