iv got a drilling and it must have shot a .360 coper jacketed 200 grain bullet.. it has about a 3/8 free bore that causes stripping with 200 grain 30-1 bullets.. as redhawk has said in the handgun forum a jacketed bullet would be best for deer.. a friend of mine that i totally respect and has hunted deer with all kinds of imaginable loads said lead bullets in his 38-55 was a very poor preformer in deer.. so im going to try pure lead paper jackets with your help here.. im also going to look for some .360 jacketed bullets but im really streaching for the stars there... any way i have some 200 grain pure lead .355 bullets and with three wraps of wall mart cash register reciept paper it gives me about .002-.003 over bore diameter.. im drying it now.. i will grease it with some hemmoriod ointment in the am and shoot it with 60 grains ffg to see what happens.. it apperas to be pretty tough paper and i am hopping it will hold up.. what is the very toughest paper i can aquire and what thickness is it with two or three wraps.. do you think a tough paper patching will work in this 3/8 freebore gun with pure lead.

.. the twist is 1/24 and i cant use a longer bullet.. ive tried plummers tape and it is very wimpy indeed.. it wont even load without problems let alone pass the slug in bore test.. .. dave..

Sounds like you're on the right track. I usually stop at two wraps and not three. I use 16 lb paper (college ruled) and two wraps give me 0.008" added to the diameter. You asked about the freebore being a problem, you patch for a revolver if that helps.

Mead tracing paper works well for me in the 45-70.

the three wraps of wall mart recipt paper has worked well for me.. i did not have a very heavy crimp at first becouse i was afraid it would tear the paper.. at this point i have no leading at all.. 60 grains of 3 f shot high and to the right with the light crimp..
i then, with clear shot and 3fg, i went to 57 grains and a wax check to not have compression be couse i was worried about the clear shot maybe should not be compressed.. i also increased the crimp amount at this time, becouse the bullet was slightly tight in the chamber.. the clear shot shot 5 inches to the left at 37 yards with two rounds very close, , but the three fg shot pretty much on.. it was stringing left to right, but it was ok right and left.. i figure it must be the crimp causing these right and left variations. .. i then realized that getting this gun to shoot on right and left. up and down AND get a reasnable accuracy is going to be a bugger.. but the good news is im not leading and i have what seems like proper velocity, and the pure lead bullets are expanding out to .62 caliber and holding 85percent or better bullet weight when fired into dirt.. so its a matter of time before i get a good load for this gun.. thanks to all your help.. paper patches are really great for this type of gun..
