Iron sights for quickest target acquisition of DG
« on: July 29, 2004, 06:22:07 AM »
What's the consensus on front and rear sights, for QUICKEST target acquisition of Dangerous Game (most accurate from 5 to 75 yards)?

Front - partridge blade/style, post, globe, or those fiber optics style???
Rear - open V, open U, peep, ghost ring???

Any opinions/experiences welcome.

Thanks.

Iron sights for quickest target acquisition

I suppose my opinion must reflect what I have on my 458 Lott.

I use a hooded front sight with a red fiberoptic bead. there is a hole in the hood to allow light in from the top.  My rear sight is a machined solid steel one piece peep. The whole thing was designed with shims to match the load and once set perfect we measured the arrangement and manufactured another on from a solid block of steel to copy the temporary shimmed one.

Now nothing can get bumped or banged out of whack and it's an absolute tack driving arrangement. I have never missed a single animal since I built this and have had to assit in the shooting of many of them.

There is a huge difference between a hunting rifle for visiting sportsman and a true back up rifle for a PH. I would choose my 375HH with a scope for hunting 99% of the time over the Lott if I were hunting.

My Lott is strictly insurance and would not be a great hunting rifle with this style of sights n my opinion. However for 75-100 yards or less in a hurry or panic the Lott is a deadly and very reliable game crumpler!

Peep sight

Thanks you for your feedback Jim.

Is your rear peep sight one of those with "pinholes" (.190 to .230) types OR is it more like a ghost ring. What's the apperture size on yours?

I swear I've seen a picture of your 458 Lott somewhere here or in other forums but couldn't find it lately. Where is it?

The reason I'm asking this sight question is I'm planning on replacing the iron sights on my Blaser R93 .416 Rem. It currently has a V-notch rear and a partridge blade in front. One thing I'd like to improve is the fact that the rear sight is too far forward on the barrel (it's like only 13 inches away from the front sight. I've purchased an extra scope base (it mounts on top of the barrel and extends about 2 inches back) and removed the rings; I've been thinking of mounitng a ghost ring at the rear end of the scope base, that way I'll have a full 24 inches of sight radius. I'm also considering of fabricating the ghost ring, if I couldn't find one that readily fits the  purpose.

Jim, how does your fiber optic front sight perform in low light?

I suspect I already know the answer to my next question, but just to make sure: If you had to do it over again, would you go with the same setup for your 458 Lott's sights?

Thanks again,
Art
