Has anyone tried these in their 209 x 50 guns, particularly the encore? I am interested to know if this is a "less hot" alternative to the regular 209 primers and if the encore action still receives the blowback as it is stated to receive from the 209.

I do shoot the 209/4, have been since April - They are not as hot as other 209 primers, but they are hot enough to serve the purpose. I really like them.

I have not tested then in really cold weather yet but I certainly do plan on using them this hunting season. I guess they are the reason I have not switched or really thought about switching th the 25 ACP.

So what you are saying then is that you are experiencing no blowback or fouling of the action with the 209-4 primers, as well as accurate shooting?

I've been thinking of getting some of the "less hot" 410 primers! The subject comes up once in a while and sounds interesting!
The standard 209 primers have worked well for me in my Encore, but as I understand, they have way more power than required for reliable ignition, and the 410 primers aid in accuracy!

I don't really know for sure what you mean by getting "blow-back" in your Encore!
I "assume" you mean that you are getting smoke, soot, etc leakage around your primer and back into the action!!! I don't get any of this in my Encore.
If it was "SAFE" to do so, maybe you could back the breach plug out a 1/4-1/2 turn or so, until the primer was a tighter fit!
You'll have to ask someone with more experience than me, whether or not backing the breach plug out a little is "SAFE" or not!

I am shooting Remingtons and A&H's and the blow back story is different for each. The 209-4 will not stop gases coming back that is a function of the breech plug and nipple.

My 24" Remington has a Canadian/Cabelas 209 conversion kit in it - blown back gases are very slight - in fact slight enough that I can use a plastic 20 gauge shot shell casing for the weather shroud. The 26" Remington with the Remington conversion sees to offer more blowback - I just got it so I can not tell you for sure the amount yet.

Both A&H's produce a hot blowback gas and plastic weather shrouds do not hold up very long.

Accuracy is great - I saw no difference between the accuracy of the rifle(s) using regular Cheddite 209 primers and/or Remington 209-4's.

A common fear with 209's is that they would actually blow the bullet off the powder with the power that they have. I have never had that problem, that I know off . But with the 209-4 I am not concerned.

I still have not tested them in cold weather, but again I totally believe thay will be hot enough to fire the charge. Heck! a #11 Mag does and I know these 209-4's a hotter than than that.

This is from the Precision Rifle's website.

"Our Encore gets so dirty from the 209 primer that after 50 shots my firing pin will not even travel far enough to ignite the primer. I need to remove the butt stock and clean the entire action with brake clean and compressed air before it will work. Too much flame trying to get through the small hole"

Now I realize that this comes from the company that is selling the breech plug conversions. However, I believe them to be reputable and telling the truth. I was just wondering if this is a problem that anyone else has seen.

I tried to get ahold of these primers but gave up. It was easier to order the conversion, so I'm trying that instead.

Andy, I ordered mine from Wal-Mart, seems like they were right at $20.00. Shot gun loading suppliers should also be able to get you some. I know Remington is hot on their new STS 209's but I am pretty sure they still make the 209-4

Next time I am at Wal-Mart, might just order another brick to be safe...

I think you will be happy with the conversion. It is so much easier to load the 25ACP than a 209 primer.
