Factory ammo accuracy
« on: August 09, 2004, 09:31:10 AM »
Hey Y'all

Don't reload yet , so I need to know of any inherently accurate (or for that matter, inaccurate) factory ammo.  I've got an informal 100 yd contest coming up. No, I don't normally shoot at that range. 6.5 in Taurus, that has done well for me, is my revolver. Suggestions greatly appreciated! Be safe.

You didn't say what chambering.  You need to experiment.  Different guns like different ammo.  You should have all this sorted out before engaging in 100 yard contests.

I once beat a guy with a scoped 30-06 rifle at 100 yards with a six and a half inch S&W 44 Mag with iron sights.  But that was because I had been doing plenty of 100 yard shooting with it and had things sorted out where as and he had that rifle in the closet collecting dust.

Federal is always a good place to start for centerfire ammo.

The first 20rds of my (new last Dec) .45 Vaquero were the Win 255gr lead round nose. The Gun Really Liked Them.

Totin,
Try Federal's American Eagle.  It's the cheap stuff in the red box.  A few years ago when I didn't have any handloads for a new .357, I grabbed a box and went to the range.  It turned out to be very accurate.  I shot it in another revolver with the same results.
To see whether or not it was a fluke, I tried the same stuff in .44 mag.  It shot as well as any handload that I had worked up.
I don't know if any others have had the same experience, but I was happy with my results.
Best,
