rem742 accuracy problems help!!!
« on: August 05, 2004, 12:34:12 PM »
howdy i've just bought a remington 742 in 243win. it's a beautiful firearm not a ding in the stock blueing is still deep, but the accuracy is terrible and as a reloader i won't give up on a gun until i've tried everything so far i've tried winchester 100gr sp, federal 100gr, pmc 85 gr hp, pmc 80gr sp, pmc 100gr sp and seven different powder and bullets handloads with at least 3 different powder weights in each and it still won't group any better than 3 inches, i purchased this firearm to hunt song-dogs with and i'd love to use 75gr to 80gr varmint bullets so if any one out there has a favourite loads that works in their particular gun drop me a line

Try Hornady 100 grain bullets
« Reply #1 on: August 08, 2004, 09:01:28 AM »
Many years ago a shooting friend bought one of these rifles. It seemed to favor the Hornady 100 grain bullets loaded over IMR 4350 at just 1 grain under max as given in the Hornady Loading Manual. I reloaded for him, so I had this information avaialble. BTW, my Remington 700 in .243 also liked this load. The 742 he had gave about 1 - 2 MOA at 100 yards, whereas the 700 was a sub MOA shooter.

hillbilly:

Could there be something other then the ammo causing the accuracy problem.  I am thinking copper fouling, lose screws. or a scope with an internal problem.  If somebody has done some hot and heavy semi-auto fire at the range it may have a build-up.

At one time Williams made an accuracy block for the Remington Autoloaders.  I believe in came out for the M740.  I do not know if it carried over for the M742.  I'll check some of my old reference material.

I did a quick check and the Williams Accuracy block was for the M740.  The M742 was brought out with a correction.  The problem was with the screw in the front of the forearm.  Remington came up with a double threaded screw in the M742.  The right tension on this screw is critical to accuracy in the M740/M742 series.

thanks for all the help but i'm afraid it's now out of my hands, as i've traded the 742 for a Tika T3 . but to answer a few of the ideas no it wasn't the scope as i tried 2 separate scopes and gave the bore a thorough cleaning with COPPER-MELT then followed with a lightly oiled patchbut as i said that aggravation is gone now!

Very good trade!  Much less aggrivation, and you should see immediate satisfaction in the Accuracy Department!

just three words I LOVE IT! the tika is tied for my most accurate rifle right now my 22-250, 338 win, 6.5X55 swede and the 25-06 all put five shots under an inch at 100yds. as a big game guide i don't get any time to hunt deer for myself so the majority of my hunting is coyotes and wolf in mid to late winter the 22-250 has been my main coyote gun for several years and the 6.5 swede has been my wolf gun but i think the 25-06 will now handle both jobs well. and as for the tika SWEET
