I have had or should i say my fathers had a contender for quite a long time and i finally started shooting it. I now have the bug bad. I have a super 14 7mm TCU and a 10" 30-30 barrel. Also a .22 long rifle which i never use. Any way i've started doing some test loads to see how well i can shoot it. The 170 grain factory rounds in the 30-30 are just ridiculous but fun none the less. One thing i was wondering is can a pistol be converted to a carbine just by buying the stock ,forend and barrel? Also the chambers in my barrels seem to be verrrry long throated. I can seat a 125 gr. nosler bt to an OAL length of 2.865" and just touch the rifling does this sound right?

in a long throated barrel....i'd just seat the bullet approximately one caliber deep, or have the base of the bullet even with the bottom of the neck. let the bullet jump......it's quite possible it will shoot good anyway.

I'll be headed to the range tommorrow to shoot both the 7mm and 30-30. I think the gun shoots better than i do already but it should be fun trying to get some good groups

Trade in your 7 TCU for a 7-30 Waters. It's the best barrel I own, but they're all pretty fun.

Welcome to the forum. I have a 270 Interarms rifle that has a huge jump to the lands. It still shoots .5" @100yds. I have another 30.06 15" barrel that has a short throat. Almost have to load it at Min overall length. It still shoots pretty good (it probably shoots way better than I can manage the recoil). I guess my point is that each barrel needs to be tweaked for each load and eventually -most of the time-you can find one that is superb.

Try the .22 barrel at 100yds+ range(mine is a 10" with an el cheapo scope). It is really fun to shoot with a scope. With the right .22 ammo that is sorted according to rim thickness, I can shoot 2" spinner targets all day long with it. 200 yds is a little bit of a headache. Might be able to tighten up those if I get the scope dialed in right. Anyway, glad to have you aboard.
