Cast Bullet / Sabot Combination
« on: August 03, 2004, 06:43:05 AM »
I have a 209X50 Encore!

I want to shoot 44Cal, 240 grain cast SWC, with a sabot!  These bullets are designed for a gas check!
I have the bullet mould and luber sizer (.430 dia.) to make these bullets!

This combo shoots pretty good in the my Encore, but they are a "BEAR" to load with the green Hornady sabot designed for the 240 grain Hornady XTP's.

In your opinion:
1. Should I try a different sabot?
2. Should I get a .428 sizer die (designed for the 44-40) to reduce the diameter another .002?

I am open to any reasonable suggestions!

My answer is "yes".  If different sabots were handy, I'd try that first.  Then I'd try the bullet sizing.

The Green Hornandy sabot can be a bear to load in a lot of rifles-

If you can get: 1. Nosler Sabot, 2. TC Mag Sabot or 3. a Harvester sabot you may have better luck getting it down.  I believe the green Hornady was probably made by MMP and is suited to go down the older Knights just fine.

.429 or .430 in these sabots should go down - you shouldn't even need a short starter.

For sure if you resized them to .428 they should go down.

Good luck in your search....
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....
