Fox Ridge versus Factory Heavy Contour?
« on: August 04, 2004, 02:57:29 AM »
What are the differences in muzzle diameter and weight between a FR heavy contour barrel and a factory one?  I know there has to be some due to having to purchase a special forearm for the FR heavy barrel.  Anybody got one of each?  I see a lot of guys shooting factory heavy barrels on TV and they don't look to be nearly as "fat" as my FR barrel.
As usual thanks for the help.

BTW my FR heavy barrel measures approx. 13/16" at the muzzle.

Fox Ridge and factory barrels are both factory barrels...made in the same place by the same people using the same materials. Thus they are the same diameter. In fact FR/factory bull = VVCG = BB = SSK bull barrels in diameter. I can interchange forends from one to another (mine are hanger bar type) at will.

I am far from an expert on these things hence the question, but.  I realize they are made at the same factory.  If a camo forend that fits a standard taper barrel will also fit a factory (available from TC or retailers without special order) heavy taper barrel why will my forend not fit the Fox Ridge heavy barrel?  When you buy a FR heavy barrel you have to buy a special forend.  I know the factory camo forend will fit both the standard taper and factory available heavy taper barrels, but not the FR heavy barrels.  This is irreputable evidence that there has to be some difference in the dimensions of a factory heavy taper and a Fox Ridge heavy taper barrel.  My question remains what is the difference in the two; lets say a .300 win mag bought from Cabelas and a .300 win mag bought from Fox Ridge?

Also I am not referring to a full bull but a heavy taper in 26" length.

The Custom heavy is .85 at the muzzle and the factory is .80 at least that what mine is.

Thank you sir.  Can you tell any difference in the two as far as weight and handling characteristics?

The factory will swing quicker only because it is lighter . Both are 26" long. I use both for coyote hunting, and both does a great job. The custom is at home in a hay field with shooting sticks though.

Chris I didn't see that option in my catalog?  I would have probably opted for the standard heavy had I known.  No matter I shot my FR .270 barrel yesterday.  5/8", 1/2" and 1/2" groups at 100 yards with Rem PSPCL's 130 grains!  Not bad for factory fodder in my opinion.

I've never seen the factory heavy contour offered by the custom shop, but I would like too.
