How about the 300 Savage in contender??
« on: August 06, 2004, 06:42:37 AM »
The last post was asking bout the .307 Winchester.  Seems like I've heard of Contender barrels in .300 Savage and .30-40 Krag.  Anyone have any experience with these rounds in a Contender? And if the 300 Savage is ok, what about the .250 Savage?  Could one of the .25 caliber carbine barrels be rechambered.  Thanks.  I'm looking for a factory round that is more powerful than the .30-30 or  7-30 Waters.

I don't know about the 250 savage, but I have had a 300 savage for my contender for about 16 years now.

Accuracy is better than the model 99 savage rifle my dad has and velocities using a 130 gr Hornady is over 2500fps.

I use CCI 350 mag primers and H322 in this round and also use shortened 308 brass, fire formed to my chamber.

When I use this barrel frequently, 1/2-3/4" groups are the norm.

YOu just do not want to fire factory ammo. I believe the pressure from factory is a little higher than the contender or G2 action is suppose to take.

midwayusa has 14" 30-30 ackley improved barrels. they will fire factory 30-30 ammo, but it would be a reloading propositon after that. an improved case shape is formed during the first firing, and provides extra powder capacity. which in turn gives extra performance when reloaded.
a case with straighter case walls and 40 degree shoulders gives less breech thrust to the weaker(compared to encore) contender frame. anything over 30-30, and 7-30 in factory form, may be a bit much for the contender.
the encore pistol does come in some really good factory calibers, but it's just a tad bigger than the contender. i love em both! 8)

I have a Bellm 30-40 barrel and a Bullberry 300 savage and both of them are keepers and I feel very safe firing factory ammo and reasonable reloads in both.  I think the 300 savage is actually a better contender round than the Krag for high velocity condom bullet shooting, but I really like the Krag for long heavy cast bullets.  Both of these barrels are 4 narrow land barrels, things might be different with fat land factory barrels rechambered...I do have to admit though, I really do like the 30-30AI also!

I have a 30/40 Krag, it is my most accurate barrel.  When I rechambered it I looked at brass, loads, and pressures.  The 30/40 won hands down.   The gun club that I belong to has a winter shoot, No pistol has had a chance, and it will give ANY hunting rifle a run for the money. so far the only rig that has beat it was a .223 with a 24X scope. ( I have a 2x - 6x on this barrel.
Go with the Krag!!!   I have chambered 3 barrels for guys in my hunting group, all shooters. :D  :D

Another 30/40 Krag vote

I love my 30/40 Krag barrel.  It is a rechamber of a factory barrel that statred as a 30 Herrit.

It is extremely accurate with either Hornady 165 gr SST and IMR 4350 or 173 grain gas checked cast with 2400.

Love it!

I have a newer stainless 14" SSK barrel in 250 Savage for the Contender. It kills deer like poison. A very good round IMO for the Contender.
