tjf76,
It depends on what you are going to be shooting, For paper it would be ok
but, If you are going to varmint hunt i think its more than you need, I'm talking about coyates, bob cat and the like. If you were going to shoot
p-dogs or some thing on that order, Your choice would be fine. On all my 6mm.s I use the leupold 3 + 9s or 3.5 + 10s I have found for all around shooting the lower power scopes will serve you much better. Thats one mans opinion, Good luck and stay safe..........Joe.........

Make that two mens opinions

I use a 7mm Rem. Mag. for just about everything and I use a 3x-9x 40mm

The longest shot I ever made (hunting) was over 500 yards with a fixed 4x Weaver on top of a Rem. 700 BDL 30'06 so personally I think that is too much scope for about anything, but I am no prairie dog hunter...I do know that my 3x-9x 40mm set between 6and7 is sufficient enough to shoot ground hogs out to 400 yards...the only time I use the 8-9 power is after I have decided to take a shot I sometimes roll it up to "judge" the wind on the grass, trees, bushes, etc. and twist back down before taking the safety off and squeezing the shot off...the reason I do this is because I get nervous when I "see" myself shake which causes me to become unsure and shake more, I know it's all in my mind but it's just my style and it has always worked for me.

but I am not you, just my opinion.

7magwoodsman,
You hit on a couple of things that a lot of people do with their high powerd scopes. #1 is it causes them to miss judge the distance and it also magnfies every little bobble you make which make them more nervous. I do use a higher power scope on my 17 rem when i'm shooting p-dogs but for every day shooting a 3/9 is about all you need, For many years i used nothing but a 4 power weaver scope. In about 1960 i started using the higher magnification scopes,( I think it was to make me look cool )Any way thats my other two cents worth. Take care..........Joe..........

the very best scope you could get are 2 of the brightest scopes any where.
1) bushnell elite 3200. fetures are raingaurd, recoil tested to 1000 rnds of .375 H&H  avalible in 3-9x40 3-9x50 4-14x40 and 50mm. the 3-9x40 is 199.99 the 4-14x40 is 250.00$$$$$$. there even cheaper from swfa. the light transmission is 93%. thats the same as the best loupolds.
2)bushnell 4200. there avalible in any power/mm. raingaurd,10,000(yes 10,000) rnds of 375 H&H      . they cost from 300.00-600.00$$. they have 95% light transmission the brightest scope made
later :D buckslayer
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

I have several varmint rifles and over 20 Leupold scopes. The only time I could see that more than 9X would be of any help would be shooting pd`s at over 500 yrds. For varmint hunting, driveing them or calling them I like scope set around 2 to 3X. On my muzzle loders and big bore stopping rifles I have 2 1/2X scopes mounted. On some ove my smaller varmint rifles I have 2 1/2 x 7X scopes, but probibly the best all around scope on the market today for the price is the Leupold 3 x 9X scopes, eather a Var X 1, but preferably the Vari X 11. The Var X111 are better, but not nessaraly worth the extra money. Tht`s my 2 cents worth from a guy that got his first centerfire rifle in the 1960`s and his first .22 rimfire in the 1950`s.

I have a leupold 4-12 VX-II on one of my 243's that has worked great.  It has a fine duplex reticle that lets you aim very precisely and 12x is enough magnification for most of my shooting.  The same scope is available in 6-18, I also like the swift premier scopes.  The newer Leupold VX-II's seem to be better quality than the older VX-III's.  I have several VX-III's that are between 5 and 15 years old and the new VX-II's I have are much clearer.  I haven't tried the new VX-III's yet but I just got one in 4.5-14x50 I hope to get out on the range and check it out pretty soon.

scope for .243
« Reply #8 on: August 11, 2004, 07:04:40 PM »
Hello fellers, I have small experience w/ scopes having only shot scoped rifles for about 6 yrs but the rifle and scope I have is a .243 rem 700 w/ a leupold 4x. I use it on deer and coyote. and so far never had a deer or coyote in my cross hairs that got away. the 4 power has a wide view and when mr yote goes into the meskite on the left and comes out on the right I have a good chance of finding him and in my youthful impatience  not trying to dial the meskite in on 12 power while he sneaks in and steals my lunch. You all have a good day and good shooting...Bill

I agree that a 4x is a great all around scope for almost all hunting situations and my first 10-12 years of rifle hunting was with a Weaver 4x, but sometimes it helps to have a little more, and thats when the variable kicks in. I would rather be "under-magnified" than "over-magnified" and few scopes can hold up against a "good" 4x at night.......
