Factory Crown
« on: July 30, 2004, 12:24:06 PM »
Has TC crowned differently over the years? I recently acquired a nice 10" .357 bull barrel, and I had to look twice to make certain it was crowned. I've seen other barrels with a more pronounced crown. I have seen barrels advertised with what the owner calls a "target" crown. Any thoughts? My only other pistol barrel is an octagonal, so it's hard to compare.

I will tell you what I think I know, but I could be wrong.  All of the older barrels had a crown that lookes like a big radius to the ID of the barrel.  Most of the newer barrels I have bought (last couple of years) and my one from the custom shop come with what I think is called a target crown.  This crown has a sort of counterbore in the end of the barrel with the radius to ID inside the counterbore.  Do not know if my description makes sense, but I tried.

I have 6 different factory barrels and among them are 3 types of crowns.  Two have recessed target type crowns (each has a slightly different recess and these are old and new barrels) and the other 4 have beveled (don’t know the exact terminology) crowns.  T/C claims they make all of their own barrels so who knows why the different crowns?  BCB

you'd have to find 2 barrels in exactly the same length in the same chambering with the 2 different crowns to know for sure...

Since a few of the folks on this forum have multiples of the same chamber/length, I wonder if anyone has noticed a difference? Like most things, folks either swear by it or at it.

Were any of the factory barrel crowns just cut off square to the barrel with linear cut marks, not circular and a slight crown into the bore?

Crown?  What crown?

I have barrels with target type step crowns.
I have barrels with rounded ends.
I have barrels with flat ends.

I have had two barrels same caliber, sights, etc but different crown.

They all seem to work.
