.307 Winchester to hot for Contender/G2?
« on: July 23, 2004, 08:30:50 AM »
Hi Chris,

The 307 is generally considered to hot for the Contender.  The 30 Alaskan is basically a 308/307 Win Ackley.  I have fired around a 1000 factory 307 rounds through my 30 Alaskan.

Chris,

No, it is for the contender.  The chambering is similar to an ackley and some of the pressure is knocked off while fireforming it.

Chris,
Can use the 307 Win brass (or 356 Win/444 Marlin) to make 6.5 SB for my 15" Contender Bower/Bullberry barrel.    Use this one for the 1000 yard shoots and speed goats.

Hey guys,

is the .307 Winchester to hot for the Contender/G2?  i know the Custom Shop makes some Encore barrels in this chambering, but i dont see any of the other makers with it in the chamber lists for either.  i'm just wondering, i hope it is as i am very intrested in the cartridge based on reading a few articles about it this morning

 Chris... I am on the lookout for a .30 cal based on the .307 Win case. I presently have a 7mm SB 15 in Bullberry  barrel which uses an improved version with 40 degree shoulder. It shoots great and has the machined brake..Very accurate with 120 or 139 g bullets.. Recently got a .356 Win Short based on the .307 or .356 case.. It is about .080 shorter than factory .356 Win.. This round is not improved but sets the shoulder back @ .1 inch.  It shoots pretty good with 180 g Sierra FN silhoutte bullets and 180g XTPs. Recoil is brisk though. My cases do not have flattened primers. I need to clock it... Started at the low end of .356 Win data and pretty much stayed there. It has a long throat and the bullets can  be seated out a ways..The frame is the standard contender...cbagman

I believe David White is chambering for the 307 Imp., which is in essence the 30 Alaskan.  Are youlooking for a rechamber or a new custom barrel?

Probably get a rechamber.. I got an email from him awhile back. They seem bigger on those .307 bxxlm off the .444 case... I have a 30-30 carbine Bullberry that  might get a rechamber, but I have not fully explored the original chambering.. I probably will wait until one pops up in a 14 or 15 inch Contender barrel.  Missed a chance at one on EBAY. That one was a JDJ .307 Short and not improved..I got a thing going for Improved chamberings right now. I really like the 7mm SB and oughta be happy with that.. I had a lot of fun shooting and hunting with rounds off the 30-30 case but the .307 case is so much stouter. I have @ 350 new .307 cases. Lots of shots to go. from cbagman

A 7mm SB is basically a Rimmed 7mm-08 Improved made from the Rimmed .307 Winchester Brass necked down to 7mm, with the case body blown out to less taper and a 40 degree shoulder.

I have the Alaskan made by Don Bower.  My rim recess is too shallow to allow the use of the thicker rim of the 444 marlin brass.  Something to consider before jumping in and buying a bunch of new brass.  307/356 winchester brass is a little thinner in the rim thickness.

Just an fyi.  Excuse the change in subject.
