Last time I'll ever be 3 steps behind - or - .........

Last time I'll ever be 3 steps behind - or - why "pine" is now a four-letter word in my camp!!!

After completing the rifle course at the rondy this weekend, we all were walking back to camp together doing the usual - back slapping and making excuses.   I kind of got sidetracked by a low slung pinyon branch caught in the possibles, so ended up being the 2nd person to walk back into the fire-ring.   1st there was only 3 steps ahead of me... and some old guy waiting there for us asked if anyone was interested in buying a 45 muzzleloader that he had bought years ago but never fired (he had seen the groups sign out on the highway so had stopped by and wanted to sell one).   Naturally, 1st in line said "lets see it" about 1 nanosecond before I blurted it out... and ole first-in-line in the end walked away with a NIB TC Seneca 45 capper that had been stored for years.   To add insult to my "pine" injury - the barter was $50 cash.

Sure would have been a nice addition to round out the set (my LNIB 32 and 36 Cherokee's).

Well, look at it this way...the Senecas were too light for the .45cal recoil !

Have you ever been at a gun show standin behind some guy that is looking at an original Hawkin bein sold fer 200 bucks and he don't know what it is, so's he's just lookin at it?  The pressure is swellin ya up until yer about ready to hit the dummy over the head, grab the rifle from his falling body, while yellin Sold! Sold! Its mine! Its mine!

I haven't either, but I bet it would be an awful feelin.

Guess I don't get your comment roundball.    Are you saying the Seneca can't handle the recoil - or that you can't?   And I am assuming you mean with a near max hunting load - not a light target load.

Shooting a hunting load at a primative shoot is just a waste of powder unless that's the only practice you'll get shooting your pole before the season opener.   If you want to win the shoot (or the shoot-off) at your next rondy with a little 45... try loading 25-30 grains black behind your RB of whatever it likes best (3F/2F) and the popgun's accuracy (actually, its precision) will amaze you.   If the range is long... maybe 40 grains tops to get it there.   Just my 2 cents, but it works pretty good and there is near zero recoil.

I use a 70 grain charge of fffg under a 240 grain maxi in my Seneca and
recoil is minimal. Accuacy is excellent and I figure that I'm getting ballistics that are similar to a .44 magnum. I have a Winchester '92 that was converted to .44 magnum and it's recoil, while not very noticeable, is more than the Seneca's. Weight of the two rifles is pretty close to the same.
The Seneca will, however, shoot circles around the Winchester.
