45/70 KATAHDIN
« on: August 08, 2004, 05:30:02 PM »
Bought a new ported Katahdin barrel.  I have several hundred 300 grain JHP .458 bullets.  I have looked at 4-5 web reloading sites and about the same number of reloading books.  I would appreciate feedback on what powder and charge to use for whitetails.  I am an experienced reloader, but new to the 45/70, much less the 18-inch barrel.   I have four other Encore barrels and two frames.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm gonna start mid-range and work up from there. I probably will go with what Steve recommends.  :D

I like H322 with the 300g bullet.   Hodgdon #27 lever gun section lists a start charge at 57g for 2000fps and a max charge at 63g for over 2200fps and the pressure is listed under 33,000cup.    The bulky powder compresses slightly at max load which always gives me more uniform results.

I second the H-322. Thats all I use in my 45/70's and 450 marlins. Just works too good.   KN
