Ballistics Sacrifice? 7mm BR in 10" vs. 15" barrel
« on: August 13, 2004, 06:04:37 AM »
So...apparently no one in the world has a 15" 7mm BR Encore barrel for sale, but there are jillions of 10" available.

I'm tempted to go with the 10" version.  Since this will be primarily a small deer hunting pistol, does anyone know whether I will be sacrificing appreciable energy by going from a 15" to a 10"?  My decision to select this round was based partially on ballistics tables, but those seem to be based on the 14/15" variety.  But the short-fat case of the 7BR might lend itself to an early pressure peak, negating significant increase in velocity from a longer barrel.  Help!

Thanks,
Rich

judging from the 7T/CU case ,which is within 3% of the 7BR case, you will be giving up around 200 fps.Energy will be about 200 pounds less also. I have shot deer with both barrel lengths in the 7 t/cu and the longer one is noticeably better. I also used the XP 100,15" barrel .Results with the XP and 14" T/C are hard to tell apart.

I have a 15" BR barrel, but it is not for sale or trade.  7 BRs are not that common in my world of travel.  I found mine at EABCO last year.  I called them and asked if they had such.

However, I did run some stats for you on a 15" vs 10" 7 BR Barrel.

15" Velocity = 2200 fps w/130 gr bullet provides the below energy:
50 yard energy = 1267 foot pounds
200 yard energy = 938 foot pounds

10" Velocity = 1986 fps with same loading as in 15"

50 yard energy = 1028 foot pounds
200 yard energy = 748 fp.

Wind drift with the 10" at 200 yards is somewhat insignificant at 2.2" in a 5 mph wind.  The 15" drift would be 1.7".

Holy macaroni, those differences are significant.  And the responses extremely quick.  Thanks much, I should probably wait on a good 15" find.

Thanks guys,
Rich
