The FG has been disapointing
« on: September 09, 2004, 02:03:21 AM »
This summer my tests with the FG .41 mag have been disappointing. I have not been able to get any groups under 2 inches at 100 yds except with some reloads that were commercially produced back in 88.
 I'm getting ready to try another batch of reloads with wc820(#9), and also I am putting some experimental loads together with solo4100. This powder is about 10% slower than #9, and designed for the .410 shotgun.
 Many of the good pistol powders also have application for .410 shotgun, so I am hoping that it can provide better accuracy than the H-110, and w-296 i've been using.
 I will report the results.

RV;

I've stated before that I've had great luck with the Sierra 170gr. ahead of H-110. The last time I was out with it I was shooting from the bench at 100yds. Ten shots went into 3.3 inches with iron sights that came from the factory. Yes... I know my old eyes are not what they used to be, and I wear glasses. Tried a 4X scope on it one afternoon and grouped around 2 inches also. But took it off when I got home, it just did not handle the same with a scope on it.
You may think that the 170's are too light, but hey, out of my gun they shoot pretty darn good. It's the rifle I'll use hunting this fall.
You might try the new SPEER GOLD DOT. They shoot good out of my revolver and seems to do good out of the FG, but  I guess I'm just stuck those 170's. I like them that well.
Hope you find a load for yours, you could even consider the Remington in the 200gr JHP, or the 210gr. JSP, both are available form Midsouth in 100, 500, and 1000.
Good shooting.

My mistake, those Remington Bullets I was talking about are from Midway, not Midsouth.
Sorry  :oops:

 I got some sierra 210 jhp, and some noslers 210jhp on the way. I guess I'll have to get some 170's as well. If it fits the bore I'm willing to roll a few.

 Thats some good shooting with iron sights. I'm getting ready to try some solo4100 I have four to test fire at 19.5 grains. 4100 is a little slower 10% than AA#9, so i'm hoping it will show some promise in a rifle barrel.
 Right now My Redhawk is shooting 2.6 inches with 210gr xtp over 19.5 W-296 with magnum primers. My FG shoots the same load, at 3 inches. Thats at 100yds.
  I like my FG, I'm just a tad disappointed so far. I'm sure that for hunting it is just fine, but postal matches will have to wait until I can tighten up the groups.

RV;

Should have mentioned last night that a 215gr. cast bullet, swc bb is a good load with 8.1 grains of Unique. I got this load from Terry Labbe who owns Magnus Bullet Co. here in Alabama. He shot this load for years out of his Marlin 41mag. But a fellow talked him out of the rifle last year, he's been sorry ever since.
I've got a couple thousand bullets on hand, bought a bunch before the price went up a few months ago. I'll be glad to send you a few to try out.
PM me if your interested.
