Best mount/ring combination?
« on: July 15, 2004, 03:33:18 AM »
I now have a 7-08 barrel that needs a scope.  This is my first rifle barrel and I am wondering about using detachable mounts (for future rifle barrels) or standard mounts and which ones to choose.   I was hoping you more experienced folks might have some advice.

Would you recommend any of the removable ring/mount systems (TC, Leupould, etc)?

If I were to go with conventional rings/base which, in your opinion, would be the best choice?

Thanks everyone for sharing your opinions and experience.  There seems to be a preference for Weaver bases and Burris rings.  I am curious about the brand/type mix of rings and base - why not Burris bases to go with the Burris rings?

I just switched my Encore/Bulberry 338 Mag mount to a Virgin Valley and Warne rings. I had (2) additional holes tapped in the barrel so I'm now using six. I didn't like most of the mounts because it put the rings too close together. The Weaver mount would be my second choice with Warne rings.

I have the Weaver/Burris combo on a 15" .308 and a 26" 209X50 and have used them with good luck on both.  I also have the Leupold DD base and rings on my 14" .223 Contender.  It has worked great too and looks real smooth.

I too like the Warne rings, but have yet to use the removable kind. I just recently purchased the Maxima base which has the TC name on it but looks to be made also by Warne. I like looks of this base, but it is still new.

Fred at Bullberry uses Burris Dual Dovetail with Signiture rings. Virgin Valley uses their Weaver style base and QD Warne rings.  I have both .

I'm new to this game, so far have a G2 with 2 barrels, 44MAG and 22 LR match, have a .17HMR and HM2 in the works.  I went with the Maxima QD rings and the Maxima bases.  The rings and bases seem to be HEAVY DUTY, and just plain HEAVY for that matter, I'm pleased with them even though they were pricey and overkill for at least the rimfire setups.

I went with the Maxima medium height QD rings b/c I currently have one variable scope that I wanted to be able to move around for doing accuracy testing & load development with.  Once I am happy with a .44 load, will probably mount a Leupold 2X on it with the plain jane maxima rings.
