:cb2: I was planning to use one this Summer on coyotes. Usually take a Marlin .357, so if anyone has any information on this, I'd like to learn, too.

If you dont want to mess up the hide,30 30 might not be the best.if you just want to anchor them it works just fine. You might try the accelerators, a 22 cal bullet in a sabot.I havent tryed them myself.

Could you tell me where you found this 55 grain .308 bullet?  I just looked thru Winchester's web site and could not find any mention of one.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Chris,

That is what I figure too but in a search of Winchester's web site and their 2004 ammo catalog(which also includes reloading components) I was unable to find any reference to Winchester Accelerators.  I just wanted to know where he found them?  The one time I tried .30 caliber Accelerators accuracy was not the greatest but that has been a while and maybe they changed.  Also the last warning I seen on Accelerators stated they were not to be used in rifles with tubular magazines.  This means unless he in using a bolt action .30-30 then he must not put more than one round in the magazine at any one time.  Lawdog

A teenager in my church uses an old winchester 94 30-30 with handloads he's tuned for coyotes.  I don't know the bullet or load exactly, but it's a round nose bullet and a very reduced load.  He get a .30" hole in, nothing out.  He uses it for brush hunting coyotes where ranges are 100 yards or less.  As far as I know he's never lost one.

:cb2: It can get confusing the way they list it since the "official" name for the cartridge is .30-30 Winchester.

I just shot a coyote yesterday, with a 125g Remington pointed soft point, fired from a Savage bolt action .30-30. The range was 200-225, and the bullet passed right through, leaving 2 .30 cal holes. I load these bullets with 37 1/2g of H335, Win primer and brass. The speed is 2560 FPS, and this load works good on deer too. If you want to use a tube feed the Speer 130g flat nose workes good also. I have been using a bolt action .30-30 for 30 years now, and am having more fun with it every year. I even sold my .22-250, because I prefered the .30-30.

I am in NW Florida where I don't see many coyotes. Only a few. All this talk about shooting coyotes, one guy on this forum says he shoots 70-100 every Winter. What do you do with them?? Leave them there? Do you take them back with you. I would be pissed as hell if i knew of someone in my area killing that many a year when I can hardly find one. Outside of just dispatching a varmint, what do you do after the kill?? thanks for any feedback.

I sell the hides of most of the coyotes I/we kill.  It is for this reason I don’t shoot coyotes during the breeding season or even out of breeding season if I see the coyote coming in while calling is a female nursing she gets a free pass(I’ll see no young starving because of me if at all possible).  I treat coyotes like a renewable resource just like any other wildlife.  Lawdog

Predator And Varmint Hunting
« Reply #19 on: September 15, 2004, 08:28:07 AM »
P & V Hunters,
It looks like there is going to be some good P & V hunting in the state of N. M. this year. I've been hitting the back roads checking the coyote population and see quite a few young pups. It seem like the rabbits are making a come back in the south west. It has been so dry the last few years that the rabbit population has declined badly. This has had an adverse effect on the coyotes. We have had some rain this summer so things are looking up for the predator and varmint hunters in my area.
Don't know if the prices of fur is going to be as good as they were last year or not yet. It would be nice if they were like in 1974-75 when you could get 40 to 60 dollars for a good coyote and 300 to 500 for a prime bob cat. I doubt that it will ever be that good again.
Good luck to all, ...........Joe..........

don't forget cast!
« Reply #20 on: September 20, 2004, 10:43:22 AM »
you might want to try cast bullets, cast hard with wheel weigts you would get 1 hole in and out, low cost and fun to make and when done well plenty accurate to about 150 yds.
if its worth doing, finish it!
