You are asking this in the lever gun section, so you know we will be biased.

The Winchester of course for me.

Dave - Why not do the easy thing and get the Ruger 96/44 lever gun? The only thing I've heard against the Rugers is that the O.A.L. for the cartridge is limited by the magazine... Good luck! CEJ...

Dave:  If those are the (2) choices I would go with the Winchester myself, and enjoy. :D    JIM

With those 2 choices I would chose neither. I would get a Marlin like I did.  :D

Lever Gun to Buy
« Reply #8 on: July 25, 2004, 07:45:50 AM »
Hi dave hall,
I have had a trapper for about 16 years now.
It has ate everthing from 240gr to 320gr hardcast.
Will feed the longer overall bullets with no problems.
I got a wild thought one day and got a shorty marlin in 44 mag.
The longer bullets would not make it out of the feed tube!
So the marlin went on down the road.I like to be able to shoot the same loads out of my rifle as I use in my hand guns.
Just my 2 cents.

Wilbe Lead-

It's nice to see you in here.  Maybe after my house is sold, I might have to try a little haggling with you, if you're still interested in selling that pistol.  If not, maybe I'll swing by and visit my old 444.  If you've got the time, you should post in here about some of your more interesting leverguns.  You've got a few that most other folks don't.

Nothing wrong with a bolt action but when it comes to some cartridges like the 44 mag you will fing the lever guns are usually quicker and easier to handle. quicker on follow up shots if needed. They are  lighter and easier to pack, especially in the woods and thick stuff. They can be as accurate as any bolt gun and are just plain more fun.
You wont be dissapointed with the winchester....
I think I just talked myself into buying another one

Dave I agree with most of what has already been said. The 44 Mag belongs in a lever gun. The loop lever would not be my choice because I think they are intended as wall hangers not hunters. I like the 94 Pack Rifle as a shooter being partial to pistol grips in lever guns. Then the Trapper would be my next pick. It handles very well. POW

I don't like Winchesters so I would also go with the Marlin if possible...

Well, you have to remember when the first bolt actions came out, they were military guns.  We all know that the military has no concept of how a gun should be built.  (look at some of our more recent choices)  You have to take your firing hand off the gun to work the bolt, you can short stroke it, and it is a very unnatural arm movement.  (almost as bad as a semi-auto pistol that you need to PUSH the safety UP to disengage)  Poor human engineering.  A lever gun just needs the lever to be pulled down till it stops, then brought back up again, finger on the trigger and shoot.  It doesn't get much easier than that.  And the lever gun carrys over your arm easier also.  Easy choice.  44 Man

Dave,
I had the win. trapper and was well pleased with it, Would still have it but some one wanted it bad enough to pay top dollar for it. Shot every thing from 180 gr to to 325 grs in it without a hitch, Don't think you could go wrong with one, good luck.............Joe..............

:cb2: I'd go with the Winchester. I have several Marlins, and the only one I ever got rid of was a .44 mag. I had all kinds of problems, from feeding, to accuracy. As for the Ruger, well, this my be heresy to say this, but if you're going .44, I sure have heard a lot of good things about the Dearfield carbine . . . .

I had to make this same sort of choice earlier this year.
I was looking for a camp gun for my wife and a another new toy for me. After reveiwing every type of 44 mag rifle, I purchased a s/s Ruger 77/44. It's light weight, 4 round detachable mag's, not barrel heavy when loaded, very good iron sights, scope rings come with the gun & mount very easily, synthetic stock, very accurate (1 hole groups @ 25 yards),  what else can I say other than she also liked this one the most, and oh yeah it's also very user freindly.
I also own a Marlin 1895GS and a 1894 Cowboy in 45 Colt.

I suggest you get whatever action you are accustomed to!

Myself, I own a Ruger 77/44!

It is pretty accurate, about 1 3/4 to 2 inch groups at 75 yards!

It is light weight, 6 pounds with a 2.5 power Weaver scope and 5 rounds!

It is easy to shoot, even off-hand!

It is easy to carry!

Good luck in your decision!
