Is Taurus Junk ?
« Reply #30 on: March 25, 2004, 03:54:13 AM »
I've got to reply by saying this passionate "Buy American"  stand you guys are taking has become a rather silly argument.

When I say "silly", It has become silly because our "Buy American" world has crumbled around us.  We're like the frog in the hot water scenario...
and here's an example...

I installed a hot water heater this weekend.  The black gas pipe was made in Korea.  I noted the pipe fittings were made by three different counties- Mexico, Thailand, and China, all from the same hardware store.  I didn't even bother to look at where the heater was made, or the flex line, or the Teflon pipe compound, etc... I just got tired of it.

You go to the supermarket driving a rig that's foreign built, or has replacement parts from overseas.  The tools you used to put those parts on have a good chance of being made from there also.

You walk in the store, and the whole produce section has fruits and vegetables from Chile, an especially grievous insult to a Californian.

I get back home and need to call my ISP server because I can't get my email, and I'm talking to a young guy in the Philippines.  No Sheite!  Most all of our telephone service operator work has gone to them, and India.

The list goes on and on.  I don't know where this will take us Americans, but I think it has become silly to boycott a foreign firearm manufacturer.

With that being said, I won't buy fruits or produce from Chile.  They don't have to abide by our laws concerning the use of deadly pesticides, and the use of human crap for fertilizer.

...and I am getting damn angry with Taurus USA.  I'm coming up on week nine, waiting for my warranty repair, and they won't return my call.  This was for a new Raging Bull 454, that I got to fire 1 box of ammo through.  I now have more of an appreciation of what GB went through with them.

Seems like in addition to American products vanishing, we're not producing skilled craftsman that take pride in their work anymore.

Every one of the mass produced American gun manufacturers are letting problem firearms leave their factories.  Remington, Ruger, S&W, and Winchester and others are ALL having problems, and the fit, finish, and woods used looks like crap to me with rifles like lever actions.

I ask the members of this board...

Would this have been allowed happen and acceptable with our gun manufacturers 20-30 years ago?

Where is our country headed with all of this?

Pat Marlin, You give much of the corporate reasoning for continuing to buy from wherever, then you tell us YOUR mad. Try being out of work like millions of your fellow Americans and not having the means to support your family and then getting on the net and listening to someone who still retains his or her job tell you how great it is to be American and spend all this money on the world economy market! I do understand the argument, that somethings we can no longer buy as American products, but, the things that I can, I'll drive clear accross town to get. Americans need to realize that until they open their eyes and make decisions for themselves, someone else will. And not always for their best interest. VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Some time back there was a discussion about the leadership in the NRA, very few people seem to know what is going on in OUR own organization! Just like cattle to the slaughter. So, keep paying your dues, keep letting them further their own interests on your money. How long has Mr. Lampier(spelling) been in office now? Has anyone in your lifetime ever held a NRA office that long before? Did you vote for him the last election? Was he on the ballot? House cleaning starts at home!

Very well put S.B,

I don't advocate buying from where ever, but I was trying to point out that it's becoming almost impossible not to.

I'm feel the ability to clean house in this country slipping away as time goes on, and it's really frustrating.

Pat, don't mean to step on anyones toes. Just remember, brother, "I'm pulling for ya, we're all in this together", to quote Red Green. My point in this is, we all need to keep a sense of humor, and do what can be done to bring about the changes we see as nessisary, by legal means.

I have the RB 454 & I am using their scope mounting system. There are 3 small plates that go under the ventilated rib.  The recoil of the gun bent the plates & the screws pulled thru the threads.  I sent them back under the warranty.  When I didn't hear from them after 2 weeks I called them & was told that they must have been lost in the mail.  I asked what the cost of the 6 screws & the 3 plates were, I was asked to hold on.  I felt they were sharpening up the pointy stick but to my surprise I was told that they don't sell just the plates. They are replacing  the entire setup & once I received it to just mail back the old mount.  All on the warranty.  Minor thing compared to some of the problems  I've read here.  Nice just the same.  Dave

Lawdog, in one of your posts you mention several officers who have had problems with the RB. What kind of department do these (police officers?) guys work for that they needed a gun of this caliber? OR are they buying them for other needs?

I recently asked a question in the taurus post about which caliber to go with
I guess I should have asked which gun to go with Ruger or Taurus,
I toyed around with a SRH in 480 7.5 tube and really liked the way it felt.
So i guess my choice is favoring more toward a Ruger SRH ugly or not.

Even tho I've posted a lot of negative stuff regarding Taurus here I'd not rule out the RBs without giving them a look. I've heard of no real documented cases of problems with them. My personal problems have been with the M44 and the Tracker Ti's more specifically the Model 460. I've heard what I consider reliable problem reports on most all the Taurus handguns except the RBs. For now they seem immune.

BUT I'd want to see any Taurus before I paid for it these days just in case especially if a new one.

I like my RB 454.

It's a fine handgun.  When I needed a repair, they took a long time but the work was done well.

But with any firearm, I don't think I will buy sight unseen.

True I should check out the RB the one issue is finding one here.
I know a few ffl dealers that would gladly order one,no problem, but
I'm not a patient person either when making a purchase of anything
and it not be up to snuff that goes for both makers.
But you are right I should find a RB and go over it extra good and then decide. Thanks GB for all the info

Well I have to say I'm not a big Taurus fan. I own mostly Smith & Wessons and Ruger revolvers. I am an avid reloader and have shot thoudands of rounds from these fine revolvers with no problems at all. That being said, most of the people were talking about RB 454 revolvers. If I were going to buy a 454 it would have to be a Freedom Arms. This is one fine made revolver and it should last much longer than the Ragin Bull. I'm just not sure how many full power loads an RB can take before being worked on.
