What is he ranting about...
« on: August 15, 2004, 11:37:01 AM »
I recently made a post titled "Just a reminder to all..."

We had a post put up about making a muzzleloading Stokes Mortars. We have featured a couple of these mortar in the past here on the board.

Some time ago it was brought to may attention that ATF was looking at these mortars even in there muzzleloading form as destructive devices.  Since we weren't dealing or talking about them at that time, I promptly forgot about the entire matter.

Then the post appeared last week. Since this a forum for the hobby shooting and building of black powder cannons and not destructive devices. I deleted the post and put up the reminder.  The reminder is directed at the Stokes Mortar only.  None of the other guns posted here in past appear to be in conflict with the ATF reg.

For more information on the Stokes Mortar visit this website. The Stokes mortar

So we're still good to discuss bowling ball mortars, golfball mortars and the like?

YES.  I think the key word regarding the mortars and cannons we build is 'replica' referring to the design/shape/form predating 1898.

I hope we don't get into a long  discussion about the  legal defintion or of the quality of the replica.  I'll just take the regulation as it stands - replica.
