Rem. JSP for .44 mag. ?
« on: August 22, 2004, 04:59:02 PM »
SBH 7.5"
I am new to reloading for the .44 Mag.
Would the Rem. 240gr. JSP be an accurate bullet.
Will be using it for Deer, Bear, Hog.
I need a good inexpensive bullet.
Also do I need to use a Mag. primer with H-110

I think it will be fine, but I'd recommend using a hard cast heavier bullet for the hogs because penetration needed to take a big (300 pound plus) hog is pretty amazing.  I'd use the hard cast bullets for bears too.  I've used them for target shooting and they are good accurate bullets. I've used them for silhouette shooting.

As for the load data, get your information from Hodgdon if they specify a primer www.hodgdon.com.  I use Win 296, which is said to be identical to H110 and my load data from Speer specifies a magnum primer. I use the CCI magnum pistol primers. I have also seen load data for them that depended on Winchester WLP primers, but have no personal experience with those primers in 44 magnum.

Check out the the Buffalo Bore cast bullets in 275 or 300 grain. I've used the 300 grain and that is what I would prefer for hogs and bears. Load data comes with the bullets.  They're not cheap, but they're worth it, just practice with a less expensive bullet until it's time to sight in for your hunt.

Clarification: I meant to say that the Remingtons are accurate bullets.

Well I got a handful of Lazer Cast 240rnfp .431
They almost fill the Throats but still fall through.
I also ordered some 240gr. SJSP Magtech and
some 240gr. Rem. JHP
I will load with H-110 and Mag. primer
and see what I get.
Wish me Luck

If you haven't done any reloading yet, take special care to adjust the crimp die so you get a good crimp. It will be different for the cast and jacketed bullets, as will the seating depth. A good crimp is important with the 44 mag.
