416 Rem advice
« on: August 15, 2004, 05:49:27 PM »
I have an opportunity to purchase a custom rifle from a friend.  It was one of two built 12 years ago.  A pre 64 model 70 Winchester action with a Krieger barrel, Magnaported, AAA wood, Leupold 1.5 - 5 scope, 2 thru bolts, glass bedded; all done by a well renowned gunsmith.  The only things I do not like is that there are no barrel sights and the fact that it is Magnaported.  It is not terribly noisy like a rifle with a muzzle brake. I was thinking about this being the dangerous game rifle to take with my 300 WSM on an African Safari.  I have shot it offhand and off sticks; the recoil is tolerable.  Is the noise from the Magnaport going to be a problem with a PH. I do my own reloading so ammo availability is not a problem.  Comments? - Mike

When you go to Africa are you going to hunt Buffalo or other big animals?  .416 should work for them

If you are going on a typical first time Africa  plains game hunt with the largest animal hunted being a Kudu or Zebra your 300 WSM will be fine and might even be a bit much.

The plan is for a Cape Buffalo and plains game.  The 416 is only for the Buff.
