Better sights for Henry?
« on: June 07, 2004, 05:49:28 AM »
Picked up a new Henry Saturday. Very impressed with the smooth action. Fit and finish was good and price was great. Fired 2-300 rounds Sun. and only had one failure to feed. Really liked the rifle a great deal.
The only problem was with the sites. I had a terrible time getting a good site picture. Actually I able to get better groups with my 22/45 with open sites. Is there a peep site out there that will mount to the scope rail? I really do not want to put a scope on this little rig.

New England Custom Gun makes a Weaver-Base Peep Sight and a “Grooved .22” sight.  I have not seen or used either and I don't know if they require changing your front sight.

I am looking for a similar sight for a Browning BL-22, so if you run across one in your search please let me know.

The big limiting factor of the Henry is the plastic front band with the sight blade molded on.  I've been eye-balling it, and am thinking it wouldn't be hard to cut a dovetail into the plastic if one were careful.  A standard steel blade or globesight could then be installed.   Williams makes a dove-tail-groove mounted adjustable peep sight that would work nicely.
As good as mine shoots, I know it would be far better with a more precise set of sights.   8)

Thanks for the help fellas. I need to get back to the range for a little more practice with this rifle. Going to have to do something with the sights though thats for sure.

I just added a Williams peep sight that fits into the grooved receiver.  Mine was $100 Canadian but they also have a much cheaper one, the WGRS 54, that would work quite well.  You will need a higher front sight.  I had a gunsmith cut a dovetail into the plastic front sight and mount a fiber optic sight.  I just tried it out today and it is quite an improvement.  I also had the had the muzzle recrowned at the same time so the improved accuracy may be partly due to that.
I do have occassional feeding problems but less than any other .22 I have had except the 10-22.

I added the Williams FP-GR FoolProof-Grooved Reciever Aperture sight to my Henry. I like it very much, but do wish they had used steel for the front sight. To improve pick up of the front sight, red fingernail polish solved that problem.
