Who is your Persona? or How did you become who you are?

Butler Ford comes from a story that my greatgrandmother told me about her father, uncle, and two neighbor brothers that enlisted together during the civil war.  They all farmed along Butler's Fork creek with a ford being between the two homes.  As they became known amongst fellow troops and NCO'c when a 4 man detail was needed "Butler's Ford" was frequently yelled.  One of the neighbor brothers was killed, one became so ill he was released from the army, and the uncle lost a limb and he too was released.  This left my greatgreatgrandfather, he continued to be known as Butler Ford.

Another life time ago my uncle (Sam) shipped me off to school.  Ranger School and after 42 fun packed days of adventure and thrills I earned the Army's Ranger Tab.  
Then he sent me to a year long camp-out.  Little place called the Republic of Viet Nam.  My call-sign was Cheyenne-6 (3rd Plt, B Co, 2/8 Cav (ABN), 1st Cav Division (AM).  
Hence:  Cheyenne Ranger.....

still working on a CAS story to go along with the name.

When I was a little kid my grandmother gave me a big disney book, all about the exploits of Pecos Bill, and Slewfoot Sue.  I sure admired that hombre.  Pecos Bill alias was taken so I just used my first name.  Plus the wifes name is Sue.  She is registered as Sloughfoot Sue cause the Slew was taken.  Not as connected as Butlers and Cheyennes, (which I admire ya'll for by the way)  but it seems to be working for us.

Now if I could just get het interested in shootin.

Did a bunch of internet searching of the old census information.  Had a relative in the 1870 to 1890 era that was a sheriff in South or North Dakota, and I was gonna use his name.  Gramma used to tell stories...or perhaps tales about him.  Never could locate the name.  Maybe I will find it someday.

I'm into genealogy as well as CAS.  In the course of researching my maternal great grandfather, I was able to confirm that, in 1870, at the age of 17, he, and his medical doctor father (my gggrand), joined Company "B" of a newly formed organization called the "Frontier Forces".  This organization was intended drive out the depredating Indians (Native Americans)  who, during the Civil War, had pretty much taken over that part of Texas west of where I now live in Blanco County .  My gggrand was assigned as a Captain (Medical Officer), and my ggrand was assigned as a Ranger.  Company "B" was assigned to Fort Griffin (near Albany, TX), was involved in several engagements with the "hostiles", and was disbanded about a year after being formed due to a lack of funding.  To keep from turning this into a thesis, the commander of Company "B", Frontier Forces, was a Captain A. H. (Hamp) Cox.   I've found some info on him, but not as much as I'd like.  If anyone runs across something pertaining to my Capt. Cox, I'd definitely appreciate you sharing with me.

Way, WAY, WAY back, when I waz a wee slip of a girl 'n' hunted fer the bounty, I waz a wicked good shot! (Bollits waz expensive 'n' I waz CHEAP even then.)

Somebody tried ta hang the moniker "Annie Oakley" on me. Whal, not ta be besmirchin Mz. Oakley but she shot a pip-squeak gun, wore girlie clothes, 'n' performed in front of crowds - t'weren't nuthin like me t'all - so I near tore that feller limb from limb.

Sometime later, I got called Calamity Jane. Whal that kind o' stuck since CJ #1 'n' me got a awful lot in common.

No real cowboy story. In my other life (fly-fishing) that's what I used and got called. Used it as my name on lots of sites. First name is Otis, used Doc Otis my first shoot. SASS wouldn't let me use that, not sure if it was either a copyrighted name or already used so got Old Cane, my 3rd choice.

From time to time I like to write yarns under the pen name, "Minority Mike." Biggun Stump is one of my characters. He is the owner and bar tender at The Last Ditch Attempt Saloon (Guns & Bait in the back.)

He's a composite of some real life characters I've met over the years.

Twenty some years ago, while I was between wives, I was seated at the bar in a joint in Lubbock, Texas.
Now I have always been a fan of the Old Westerns and once I moved to Texas began to dress the part.
This old boy seated next to me looked me up and down and said "Well Boy, are you a rancher or a farmer?"
Now even back then "boy" did not quite fit but since this gentleman was my senior and Mama always taught me to be polite, I responded, "Neither one Sir. I'm an engineer."
"Oh, one of them. All Hat, No Cattle"
Knowing that he was just trying to get a rise out of my I answered. "Yes Sir. You got it."
So when it came time to pick an alias for this game I decided to honor that memory.

NC, great story. Almost reminds me of the Texan joke, the one where everyone was sitting around bragging about the the tens of thousands of acres and thousands of head of cattle they have and what their spread is called. Got to the last guy and asked what he had. "Twenty acres." When they got done laughing they asked what he called it. "Dallas."

   I took mine from the fact that when I was a child I would go to the store with my grandfather to peddel our eggs and other thing for store good and to honor his good name  :grin:  :grin:

Well, mine's only partly cowboy in nature. Holiday Hayes is my full monicre, although most just call me Holiday or even "Doc". Since I've always been interested in shooting and guns, my friends would liken me to Wyatt Earp. I would always say"Nah, I'm more like Doc Holiday, Wyatt was too serious" and it kinda stuck. When I started driving a truck, I started using Holiday as my C.B. handle. Hayes is my middle name, it's a family name passed down from one of the first of my ancestors to settle in North Alabama named William Hayes Burns. Since William was the name of a dozen family members before and since, he was known as Hayes. I took the two, stuck 'em together, and now I'm Holiday Hayes! A long story, ain't it? :-D
