Sand or shot.

Well Ive got an adjustable front rest and front and rear bags on the way to me.  Now I need to choose, fill it with sand or shot?  The sand would be a little more inconvenient because I have lead shot right here now.  Does it even make a difference?  Whats everyone elses opinion?

Lead shot is much better. No dust, they stay put, and no bounce. Of course the down side is they are quite a bit heavier to tote around. The finer the shot the better. 8s or 9s would be perfect. Other sizes of shot will work though.

Have fun Brian, hope you get that Encore sighted in and some good loads worked up.

I was thinking about using new aquarium gravel.  Thought it might be clean, dustless and lighter than lead shot or even sand.

Thoughts????

There is absolutely nothing works as well as sand. It conforms and holds shape and just in general is the perfect medium for filling bags. I've tried a lot of different fillers and heard of others but sand is the proper thing to use.

I bought a Caldwell bag a while ago and they recommended filling it with rice. I did, the non-instant variety and it's surprisingly heavy.

I tend to shy away from more lead exposure than I already get now days.

Plus with 8+ pounds of uncooked rice you have a ready emergency food supply.

I don't think so. It's pretty much a tighly knit nylon (can't remember if it's coated or not), I don't shoot cast bullets. Can't think of how any would get in there.

There's lead azide in them there primers.  Save that rice for somebody we really like.  (I could name a few names, but you know who they are.)

I use pelletized plastic beads.  My buddy uses kernels of field corn.  I have also used sand-bags.  Just put a plastic bag inside the cloth shot bag,filled the plastic bag with sand and used a plastic tie to close it.  Then used another plastic tie to close the shot bag.  Worked real well with no dust and no moisture absorbtion.

True but if I'm going start worrying about that I'd better start holding my breath between shots.

I have had some filled with beans but have been using sand for the last 10 years or so.  My wife just made a new bag for me and I filled it with the pellatized plastic (from a craft store).  I am hoping it works good enough because 3 sand bags in my range bag makes it way to heavy.

After years of sand, I had an opportunity to try shot.  TOO heavy and my guns tended to bounce off the bags. Went back to sand with a dab shot left in for a little extra weight.

I use a mixture of sand and vermiculite.  Conforms well and is not as heavy as just sand.

Haha :lol: ....Vermiculite is a natural occuring mineral, not an edible. It's most commonly used as a soil enhancement in gardening.

I like sand, and I like towels in a day pack. I don't like commercial rifle rests (or they don't like me: Horizontal stringing).

As far as filler goes nothing beats sand,conforms very well, but as for conforming a holding in place for 100% stationary the Bench Master shooting rest beats all, worth every pennie for you guys who like to shoot over 200 yards, this baby will save you many waisted rounds, you can tweak her right in with out touching your rifle, once the rifle is set in place, there is trim knobs to tweak her in. Great tool for sighting in your rifles. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Well I got them in a few weeks ago, and got too anxious.  I wound up just filling them with shot.  But of course a lot of good it did me, I got them in just 2 days before I got locked out of my club and have yet been able to use them  :cry: .
