« on: June 17, 2004, 06:01:40 AM »
I would like some one to tell me what they think the heaviest recorded
Elk weighed. This is not a trick,, A feller was at my house last night and was telling me how much he thought a big bull would weigh and i thought i would get some ideas from you guys and invite him back to show him what you all thought. The reason is, I have taken a few elk and have a pretty good idea how much they weigh, But i think my friend has the BIG eye on them,,,, Thanks Guys can't wait to hear back from you.

The Co DOW weighed one that was shot illegally that weighed in at 1280 lb.  That is the largest I ever heard of that was actually weighed.

SKB2706,
Thanks for the come back, There was this fellow that came to my house last night and told me that he and his wife was traveling in the mountians of Arizona and a bull elk crossed the road in front of them that was as long as two lane lanes of pavement, They were in a little Toyota car and i said it must have looked mighty big from the ground level. His eyes were as big as dinner plates. Perseption i think. Thanks again.........Joe.............

have to look into it, but in General  roosevelts elk are  bigger. than

Snowdog,I have always been told that the rocky mountian elk was the largest, I'm not trying to start any thing, But would like to know for sure
not that it matters any. I know i have killed some mighty big elk in the northern part of New Mexico. I would guess them to be 1000 lbs or more.
Maybe some one will come on with a better opinion as to the weight of a big bull elk. Have a good day and stay safe.........Joe..........

the farther you had to drag it the heavier it got too...........by the time you got it to the truck it probably weighed in at about 2500 lbs.

2505 to be exact :)

Plus, it was uphill both ways, in six feet of snow.

Not to mention that cliff you had to scale with it tied to your back with a grass string in a blizzard........with no shoes.......

As I understand and read.  rocky Mountain Elk have longer antler growth, roosevelts are much thicker main beams but not known to be long.  I have
read in several publications that generally  "Rosies" are bigger than RME.

A  B & C scorer frined of mine  told me he thinks the Rosies are bigger
because most Rocky Mt elk,  Migrate a lot more for food sources,
the Roosvelts don't have to  Travel as far and therefore don't burn
as much energy.  Personally  I have never shot a huge roosevelt my
biggest was a 3x3.  he weighed an estimated 850 lbs.  when his eye
tooth was removed the  department of willife officer estimated his
age to be  under 3 years old.  the cow I shot last year (Roosevelt) archery
was estimated at  700 lbs. as I understand it 7 to 800 lbs is about the
average for a rocky moutain bull elk.  thats not quoted in stone.  So please
don't get on me to roughly.
